Ballarat trainer Mathew Smerdon celebrated a career milestone on New Year’s Day, securing his first city win at Flemington with Layeruponlayer in the final race of the day.
It marked not only his first runner at the iconic track but also his 10th career win as a trainer, capping a perfect day that began with a victory by Miss Magoo at Terang.
“It’s unreal. I’ve got to pinch myself a bit. Just over the moon, really,” Smerdon said, reflecting on the achievement.
Layeruponlayer, owned by Hong Kong-based David Price, has flourished under Smerdon’s care after struggling mentally during his time in Hong Kong.
“He melted a bit mentally over there,” Smerdon noted, crediting the horse’s relaxed and happy environment for his resurgence.
Starting his training career just two years ago, Smerdon is now a rising force in Victorian racing.
