WA's riding ranks is set to be bolstered this week with the return of Mauritian-born apprentice, Brandon Louis

The 26-year-old will relocate to Perth and join Chris and Michael Gangemi’s stable after riding at Launceston on Wednesday.

Louis is no stranger to local racing and his having his third stint in the west after commencing his apprenticeship in Mauritius in 2015.

Being back in WA will revive fond memories for Louis after he booted home his first winner with his first ride on Miss Merit in Kalgoorlie.

Five years after making his WA debut, Louis said the opportunity to return to a leading stable was too good an offer to knock back.

“I’m excited to be back and put it this way, I’m back home,” Louis told The Races WA.

“It’s been a long journey and I always wanted to come back.

“I went back to home after my first time in Perth, did alright, came back again, went back to Mauritius, but the timing wasn’t good with injuries.

“I went to Tasmania and had a bit of success but the Gangemi’s offered me a chance and I said why not.

“They supported me towards the end of my last stay and have always kept an eye out for me.

“They said they have a lot of horses coming through and why didn’t I come back.

“I had an offer to go to Melbourne, but it didn’t feel like the right move and I have contacts in Perth.

“I think going to the Gangemi’s is going to be a good move and I don’t think it could have gone better.

“Last time I was in Perth I was probably immature, but I feel like I’m a better rider now.”

Louis still maintains a 3kg city claim as Tasmanian wins are not classified to have metropolitan status.

Michael Gangemi, who trains in partnership with his brother, Chris, says he’s delighted to have a mature-aged apprentice join his team.

“To have an experienced apprentice claiming 3kg in town is going to a big bonus,” Gangemi said.

“He’s well known here and has the experience of riding and being familiar with out tracks and set up.

“He’s an experienced jockey who can ride and we’ve kept a close eye him since he was last here.

“We’re rapt to have him come across.”

Louis currently sits on 19 wins for the season and last month represented Tasmania in the National Apprentice Series (NARS) at Strathalbyn in South Australia.
