Delta Blues, the first Japanese horse to win the Melbourne Cup, has passed away at the age of 24 due to complications from laminitis, a painful hoof condition. The historic Melbourne Cup winner made his mark in 2006, defeating fellow Japanese horse Pop Rock in a thrilling finish, with just a nose separating the two.
Trained by Katsuhiko Sumii and ridden by Yasunari Iwata, Delta Blues’ career highlights include his 2006 Cup victory and a third-place finish in the Caulfield Cup. He also won the Group 1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St. Leger) in 2004.
“We are saddened to announce that Delta Blues passed away on October 8, 2024, due to complications from laminitis,” an official statement confirmed.
After retiring, Delta Blues enjoyed a peaceful life at Old Friends Japan, where he remained beloved by fans. His legacy continues to inspire, with another Japanese horse, Warp Speed, set to chase Cup glory this year. “Rest in peace, Delta.”
