The dream of competing in this yearβs Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) has been shattered for the connections of the reigning New Zealand Horse of the Year, Sharp βNβ Smart.
After an uncharacteristically lacklustre performance at the Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m) at Hastings, a subsequent veterinary examination revealed a troubling viral infection, sidelining the horse for the foreseeable spring races.
βHe has got a viral blood disorder.β said Graeme Rogerson, who trains the gelding alongside Debbie Rogerson.
Providing clarity on the recent performance, Rogerson remarked, βHis work was enormous last Tuesdayβ¦ but he was fully vetted yesterday which revealed a viral infection.β
Highlighting their concern, he added, βThe horse comes first and all the owners are right behind us.β
Due to this setback, Sharp βNβ Smart will also miss out on the Group 1 Livamol Classic (2040m) and Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).
