The iconic Melbourne Cup carnival celebrations are set to see a significant change this year as the much-loved street parade is rumoured to not be going ahead.
The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) is poised to unveil plans for an alternative city event, replacing the parade for 2023.
VRC CEO, Steve Rosich, while not confirming the parade’s cancellation outright, remarked, “We have a longstanding relationship with the City of Melbourne and our plans this year will include a feature event in the city.”
Although the VRC secured funding from the City of Melbourne for events in 2022 and 2024, there was an absence of an application for 2023.
The parade’s hiatus is notable since it was only previously halted in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.
The Melbourne Cup 2023 is set to be run on Tuesday 7th November.
