Hugh Bowman has talked up the chances of his Melbourne Cup mount and expects he will relish the extra distance of the 3200m Cup.
Bowman put English raider Marmelo through his final gallop at Werribee on Thursday and couldn’t be happier with his progress leading up to Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup.
“He’s right where you’d want him. I hadn’t sat on him since before the Caulfield Cup and he feels as though he’s improved,” Bowman told Racing.com.
Marmelo stormed home late in the Caulfield Cup, finishing sixth and just 2.7 lengths behind winner Boom Time. Bowman says he plans to be closer in the run for the Melbourne Cup.
“He half missed the start and I didn’t want to drive him mad but next week I expect him to be closer in the run,”
“His form suggests he’s much better over a bit further than the 2400m (of the Caulfield Cup) – I’m expecting a big run from him.”
Marmelo sits on the third line of betting at $9.50 in the Melbourne Cup market.
