Newgate Farm’s star miler a Brutal blow for competition

Brutal - 2019 Doncaster Mile

“Brutal is just one of those extra special horses that showed rare talent from day one,” said Hall of Fame trainer John Hawkes on news that Brutal will be standing at Newgate Farm, in the Hunter Valley.

“To win a Doncaster at just his seventh start is something that only the really exceptional ones can do,” with John Hawkes in referring to Brutal’s steam rolling victory in the $3m Doncaster Mile

Again, Newgate Farm have shown that they have met the market with Brutal winning the time-honoured Doncaster Mile of 1600m at The Championships, as a 3yo against seasoned opposition.

The inform Glen Boss rode Brutal to speed on jumping from Barrier 18 in the Doncaster, as he knew Brutal had challenged the great mare Winx previously in the George Ryder Stakes of 1500m.

Racing outside the front runner Dreamforce well into the home straight, Brutal sprinted away at the 100m, to score by one length in a time of 1-37.65min, on a Soft 7 Randwick track.

At his previous start in the weight-for age George Main Stakes, Brutal was targeted by the champion Winx, and did not shirk his task in the home straight when second, with Dreamforce in third.

In winning his only start at two years by five lengths over 1200m at Caulfield, Brutal then scored listed wins as an early 3yo in the McKenzie Stakes of 1200m and Antler Luggage Plate over 1400m.

Earlier he was third in the Southern Cross to Eckstein and Dothraki, and then sixth to Trapeze Artist and Shoals in the Canterbury Stakes, both at Randwick.

As an early 4yo in targeting the Golden Eagle, Brutus defeated Home of The Brave and Classique Legend first up in the Premier Stakes of 1200m, which is classed as an Everest lead-up.

In finishing third in the Sydney Stakes, he was gallant in defeat in the Golden Eagle and retired to Newgate Farm the winner of five of his ten starts, with three placings and over $2.6m in stakes.

Classed as the ultimate breeding outcross, especially with mares of Danehill blood, Brutal is an impressive son of NZ Horse of The Year in O’Reilly, who was also Champion Sprinter-Miler,

As four-times Champion NZ Sire O’Reilly has an excellent 70% winners ratio with his 96 stakes winners headed by Silent Achiever, Alamosa, The Jewel, Final Destination, Shamrocker and Sacred Falls.

A full-brother to stakes winner Talaria, Brutus is from the stakes placed winning Golan mare Alberton Princess, a half-sister to Gr2 winner Te Akau Rose, and to the dams of Cavalry Rose and Testarhythm.

This is the immediate family of Sir Alberton and Alberton Star the dam of Lady Alberton and Alberton Park and grandam of Wyndspelle and Magic Briar.

Described as ‘genetic excellence, untapped potential’ Tassort stands at Newgate Farm as the Silver Slipper placed and Golden Gift 2YO Plate winner, possessing a ‘blue hens’ champions’ pedigree.

“Tassort is out of one of Australia’s great blue hen mares Essaouira, and from the dominant I Am Invincible sire line,” said Bryan Carlson, the Emirates Park General Manager.

“The combination of his genetic excellence and untapped talent is the reason we purchased Tassort.  We will be supporting him heavily at stud with many of our quality mares.”

Sired by Australian Champion 3YO Colt in Brazen Beau, who won the Coolmore Stud Stakes and Newmarket Handicap, and second in Diamond Jubilee Stakes. Lightning Stakes and JJ Atkins Stakes.

By I Am Invincible, Brazen Beau has sired the winner of over $5.2m with his eldest just 4yo’s including Pretty Brazen, Colada, Dubai Station, Sartorial Splendor, Accession and Avengers Queen in Europe.

‘Bred in the purple’ Tassort is half- brother to triple Gr1 winner Alizee, the WTR Sprint Older Female of 2019, successful Golden Slipper winning sire Astern and stakes placed winner Mogador.

From the winning Exceed and Excel mare Essaouira, he is the immediate of Australian Champion 3YO in Triscay, though his champion 3yo daughter La Baraka and Gr2 winning granddaughter Alizes.
