Jockey Patrick Moloney, recovering from a serious fall at the Cranbourne trials, is preparing for more surgery to address his fractured collarbone and severely injured hand.
The 29-year-old, who underwent initial surgery, needs another operation scheduled for December 6 to remove wires from his hand, which was broken in six places and had a dislocated finger.
Moloney, a Group 1-winning jockey with 13 wins and 17 placings this season, is hopeful of returning to race riding early in 2024.
The recovery has been challenging, with both arms incapacitated. His left collarbone and right hand injuries have significantly hindered his mobility, leading to a frustrating recovery period.
Despite the setback, Moloney remains positive, supported by his wife Jess, a nurse at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.
Jess, niece of Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne, has been instrumental in his care, assisting him with daily tasks during his recovery.
Moloney, eager to resume race riding, has found some silver lining in the situation, enjoying more time with friends and family, attending social events, and taking a break from the rigorous demands of the racing industry.
As he prepares for his upcoming surgery, his focus is on rehabilitation and a swift return to the racetrack.
