Point King, a rising star in the Freedman stable, is being aimed at the Melbourne Cup after a commanding 3.75-length victory at Moonee Valley.
Owned by Lloyd Williams, the six-year-old gelding impressed in his first run for trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman, with his next target being the $300,000 Group 2 Archer Stakes on September 14.
Despite his starting price, Sam Freedman wasn’t surprised by Point King’s performance.
“Credit to Lloyd and Nick (Williams), both of them said the handicapper got his mark wrong leading into that race, and they were dead right,” Freedman said.
The trainer is optimistic about Point King’s potential, especially over longer distances, as the Melbourne Cup looms.
Point King, a son of Zoffany, was initially trained by Joseph O’Brien in Ireland and has since transitioned smoothly to Australian racing.
Meanwhile, another Williams-owned horse, Post Impressionist, is also progressing through spring under the Freedmans, with both horses keeping an eye on the Melbourne Cup.
