Race against the clock to host Magic Millions raceday at Gold Coast

Repairs to the Gold Coast track are underway after a 25m x 10m section was poisoned last week, forcing the relocation of Saturday’s Magic Millions opener to the Sunshine Coast. Racing Queensland CEO Jason Scott remains optimistic about hosting the prestigious Magic Millions Raceday at the Gold Coast. “We’re going to make every effort to run there,” he said.

The damaged area is being re-turfed with grass transplanted from a chute, and the team that repaired Flemington’s vandalised track has been enlisted. Repairs are expected to be completed by Wednesday morning, with gallops scheduled to assess safety. A decision on the venue will be finalised Thursday morning.

Contingency plans include Sunshine Coast and Eagle Farm, but Scott highlighted the need for swift clarity. “Millions are going to have a look today at both the Sunshine Coast and Eagle Farm and work out what suits their needs,” he said.

Scott dismissed early speculation about vandalism, citing the shape of the damage. “It’s a perfect rectangle there, almost, so I’d be surprised if it’s vandals,” he explained. Activist groups have also denied involvement. “The last thing they want to do is injure horses,” Scott added.
