When the confirmation of Chris Caserta’s passing came from police, racing participants worst fears were realised. Shock, real concern and the desperate clinging to hope gave way to disbelief, devastation and tears.
A good mate to many had been lost far too early and the entire industry was the poorer for the tragedy.
Caserta drowned when going for a late night swim at the Gold Coast on Wednesday night.
Tributes to Caserta have dominating the social media posts of racing figures in recent days, particularly those coming from his fellow riders, who all gave witness to what he gave to them in terms of friendship and the good times they shared, all of his positive attributes emphasising how much he will be missed.
Caserta relocated from Victoria to Queensland in 2020.
Matt Hyland issued a statement on behalf of the Victorian Jockey’s Association but, in essence, he was talking for everyone involved in the industry.
“The Victorian Jockeys’ Association is heartbroken by the news of Chris Caserta’s sudden passing,” VJA CEO Matt Hyland said.
“Chris was a popular member of Victoria’s riding ranks and will always be remembered for the big smile he always had on his face.
“While Chris rode in numerous states, he started his apprenticeship in Victoria. He always showed natural talent as not only a jockey, but as an athlete and sportsperson.
“Chris is from a wonderful family. Our hearts go out to them, Chris’ friends and everyone else that was touched by him.”
An absolute strength of the racing industry is the fact that, while it at times seems fragmented, any tragedy affecting one of their own and their families binds the industry in a way which cannot be undone.
That unconditional industry support will be there for Caserta’s family for a long time to come.
RIP Chris Caserta.
