In today’s market, a $40,000 purchase doesn’t usually yield much, but for Alegron’s new owners, it could be a game-changer.
The five-year-old enters Saturday’s $400,000 Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) with renewed hope after breaking his losing streak under trainer Bjorn Baker’s guidance.
Previously adorned in Godolphin blue, Alegron’s resume boasts notable performances in classic races like the Victoria Derby and ATC Derby.
Despite a string of unplaced runs, Baker took notice when Alegron was listed for sale online.
Acquired with a throat issue, Alegron underwent surgery, which has proven effective.
“He’s a strange horse as he doesn’t get to his best until he hits 2000 and beyond.” Baker said.
A Brisbane Cup victory could set sights on loftier goals.
“If he won the Brisbane Cup, you’ve got to dream, and we’d be partly on our way to a Melbourne Cup.”
