Smith’s decision set to Impact Epsom Handicap and Turnbull Stakes

Fierce Impact could be a surprise starter in the Epsom Handicap with trainer Matthew Smith revealing the race is still on the table.

Smith was thought to be tossing up between the Group One Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington and the Hill Stakes over the same distance on the Epsom undercard.

While both races remain in the mix, Smith says he hasn’t ruled out the Epsom in which Fierce Impact has equal top weight of 58kg.

” We haven’t really cemented which race we’re going to,” Smith said.

“I’d like to look at the nominations first and see what’s going to the races.

“We will have a look at the Epsom and just see what is in there light because we do have 58 kilos.

“Same with the Turnbull. We want to see what’s in light there because we will be carrying 59 in the Turnbull.”

Smith brought Fierce Impact back to Sydney after he claimed his third Victorian major with a victory in the Makybe Diva Stakes.

The entire was kept up to the mark with an impressive barrier trial win last week and Smith said he was in top order.

“He’s settled back in nicely. We gave him a tick over trial between runs to see where he’s up to and he was enthusiastic and looked good,” he said.
