Soulcombe, runner-up in the 2023 Melbourne Cup, is set for a patient return to racing after an extended rehabilitation from an off-fore leg injury.
The injury ruled him out of all competition in 2024, prompting connections to take a cautious approach to his recovery.
Managing part-owner Ozzie Kheir confirmed the gelding was given an additional three to four months of rehabilitation to ensure his long-term soundness.
“We’ve purposefully taken our time with him,” Kheir said.
“I reckon we’ve given him three or four months’ longer rehab than we typically would… to give him the best chance of a full recovery.”
Soulcombe is now back in light work under trainer Chris Waller, with a low-pressure autumn campaign planned.
“We hope to give him a couple of runs in the autumn,” Kheir added.
“As long as he’s sound, that’s the main thing because we know he’s got the talent.”
The ultimate goal remains the 2025 Melbourne Cup, with Kheir emphasising patience.
“Our view is he’s a Melbourne Cup horse, and we didn’t want to rush him… Fingers crossed he can get back to the races and to the big one next spring.”
