Geelong Cup winner Steel Prince has shot up the order of entry for the 2020 Melbourne Cup after receiving a weight penalty for the race.

Chief Victorian handicapper Greg Carpenter has given Steel Prince a 1kg weight penalty for the 2020 Melbourne Cup elevating the horse to 25th in order of entry.

The penalty places Steel Prince just outside of the final twenty four for the race however with Mirage Dancer not heading there he is all but secured a spot in the field.

Steel Prince ran ninth in the Melbourne Cup last year after securing a ballot exempt entry into the race after winning the Andrew Ramsden.

Sam Freedman said Steel Prince was a better horse than last year when he had a chequered preparation, compared to a perfect one this time around.

Steel Prince shortened into $21 in Melbourne Cup odds from $61 prior to his Geelong Cup win.
