Stradbroke Handicap an option for in-form mare Bella Nipotina

Michael Christian, breeder and managing owner of star mare Bella Nipotina, acknowledges retirement looms in the distance. However, for now, he savours the journey alongside the resilient sprinter. Bella Nipotina, a home bred daughter of Pride Of Dubai, marked her 50th track appearance with a gallant runner-up finish in the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup, surpassing $10 million in earnings.

Ranked among the highest-earning mares in Australasian racing history, Bella Nipotina’s future as a broodmare looms, but Christian entrusts trainer Ciaron Maher to make the call on retirement.

“From my perspective…every run she has could be her last,” Christian reflected on racing.com, noting her remarkable longevity and competitive spirit. Maher’s guidance dictates Bella Nipotina’s racing career, considering her soundness and form.

Despite initial plans for a winter swansong in the G1 Tatts Tiara, Maher contemplates a start in the G1 Stradbroke Handicap, a challenge Bella Nipotina has yet to face over 1400m. Christian trusts Maher’s judgement, emphasising their symbiotic relationship in decision-making.

“While it wasn’t initially a race we thought would be her go…Ciaron doesn’t think the 1400m will pose any problems,” Christian acknowledges, highlighting Maher’s confidence in Bella Nipotina’s abilities.

Ultimately, whether it’s the Stradbroke or another venture, Christian remains content to follow Maher’s lead, cherishing each moment of Bella Nipotina’s remarkable journey on the track.
