Talented mare Makarena is chasing her first stakes win in the Golden Pendant.

Michael Hawkes has all but ruled a line through Makarena’s first-up run and is looking forward to seeing how she can acquit herself against the likes of star mare Amelia’s Jewel in the Golden Pendant.

Makarena had the tough job of carting the field up to runaway leader Belclere first-up in the Sheraco Stakes (1200m), then was momentarily held up behind that tiring horse in the straight, eventually getting clear to finish fourth to Sunshine In Paris.

Hawkes believes she could have filled a placing if not for the interference but says a more even tempo in Saturday’s Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) will be more to her liking.

“I just put a line through first-up, that’s my honest opinion,” Hawkes said.

“The way that leader went out in front made it near-impossible. She had to chase and lead the rest of the field up.

“Hopefully it’s a lovey, even tempo of a race, not like last start, and we’ll be happy.

“One hundred per cent she will strip fitter, and I know Amelia’s Jewel is there but they’re all beatable.”

Rosehill was rated in the soft range on Thursday, conditions Makarena has proven she can handle in the past.

She is also a winner of her only start over the track and distance in the Tapp-Craig last spring and Hawkes is hoping another bold showing on Saturday will underline her claims to a spot in the $2 million The Invitation (1400m) at Randwick on October 26.

“They’re all on the table but The Invitation, it is a race we’ve earmarked, the Golden Eagle is a race we’ve earmarked,” he said.

“You’re trying to win some black-type with a filly like her as well, so we’re just trying to place her.

“It’s a long spring but I just want to see her come back second-up and put her best foot forward.”

Apprentice Zac Lloyd has the ride on Makarena from barrier three.

She is a $6 chance with Semana ($2.70) and Amelia’s Jewel ($2.80) vying for favouritism.
