The John Gosden trained Trawlerman, who won the prestigious Ebor Handicap under a class ride by Frankie Dettori at York on Saturday, could be a late entry for the 2022 Melbourne Cup.
Leigh Jordon, the Victoria Racing Club’s Executive General Manager of racing, who attended the York Festival, suggested to Racing.com that connections of Trawlerman, as well as the Ebor Handicap runner-up Alfred Boucher and the third placed Earl Of Tyrone were interested in possibly taking up a late nomination into the Melbourne Cup.
Late entries are permitted for horses that ran in specific races at York in the UK and at Deauville in France … and the Ebor fits snugly fits into that category.
If all of these runners names appear as late nominations when that deadline closes tomorrow morning, it will once again ramp up the international intrigue in the race and add to the steady build-up towards ‘the race that stops a nation’ which is now only a little over two-and-a-half months away.
