Tom Prebble scored aboard Independent Road

Apprentices Tom Prebble and Campbell Rawiller both grew up in Hong Kong as their fathers etched out successful riding careers.

With their fathers Nash Rawiller and Brett Prebble now among the jockey ranks in Sydney, the two apprentices are based in Melbourne, etching out their own careers.

The two apprentices were at the opening meeting of the Warrnambool May Carnival on Tuesday with Rawiller guiding home Teofilo Star in a division of the maiden hurdle while Prebble scored aboard Independent Road in the Vale Dean Holland Handicap (1700m).

It was the pair’s first winners at the Carnival.

“Super,” Prebble said.

“We both grew up in Hong Kong and it is pretty cool to both ride a winner – one over the hurdles and one on the flat.”

Apprenticed to Peter Moody, Prebble began riding last year and has now ridden 23 winners following Tuesday’s success for the Ben & Jd Hayes stable with his claim in the provincial areas of Victoria now down to 2kg.

“It’s good to ride a winner here especially for Ben and J D Hayes,” Prebble said.

“The horse was super. He gave me every opportunity and he hit the line strong.

“I just got told to build momentum and with quite a bit weight drop it helped him get through that ground which he usually struggles in.”

J D Hayes, who also grew up in the racing mecca of Hong Kong, said Prebble was doing a terrific job so early in his career.

“We love sons of guns,” Hayes said.

“He’s got big shoes to fill and he’s doing a terrific job and he’s got a great head on his shoulders.

“He’s got a great attitude to work and getting the 52-kilos today, you look at him, he’s quite tall, but he’s dedicated, and the results will flow.”
