Premier trainer Darren Weir has broken his own Australian record for most wins in a season.
Weir’s record sat at 449 wins, which he achieved last season, but wins at Echuca and at Flemington early on Saturday’s programs took the trainer past his previous mark with a few weeks to spare.
A week earlier at Caulfield, Weir also moved past his previous record for most Victorian metropolitan wins in a season which had stood at 137 wins.
Premiership-leading jockey Craig Williams had the ride on the Weir-trained Sixties Groove ($1.65 fav) in Saturday’s VRC-CRV Cup Tour Trophy (2000m) at Flemington and was impressed by the way the import sprinted away from his rivals in the final 200m on a seven-day back-up to win by 3-1/4-lengths.
“Today they were very confident with Sixties Groove,” Williams said.
“He’s a lovely horse going forward.
“I love the way that he accelerated and quickened away from them.”
