Persian Caviar became the first foal from Black Caviar to emulate the legendary mare and win on debut when she got her career off to the perfect start at Wangaratta on Monday.

The daughter of Written Tycoon proved too good for her rivals when a dominant winner of the Worklocker Wangaratta 3YO Maiden Plate over 1100 metres.

Like Black Caviar, who launched her career with a Flemington win and saluted at her 24 other racetrack appearances, Persian Caviar is trained by Peter Moody but it was Patrick Moloney in the saddle, not Black Caviar’s regular rider Luke Nolen, who is sidelined with injury.

Persian Caviar showed good nous out of the barriers to find the spot behind the leader and stablemate Box Office before popping off the fence upon straightening and taking control midway down the straight.

The $6 chance, who counts Katherine Coleman as co-trainer, then surged clear to score by 2-1/2 lengths from Paparazzo ($41), who snatched second from Box Office ($3.70) on the line.

“She did everything you could have asked for in a first-starter going to the races, she was an absolute pleasure to ride,” Moloney said.

“The only thing I will say is, she didn’t know how to put them away. She got here that well, she stargazed and shied at the winning post, so there’s plenty of upside there.

“She’s got a long way to catch up to mum, but she’s got a kick off point here at Wangaratta and I can see her progressing through the grades and maybe getting up in trip as well.”

Persian Caviar is the sixth to race from Black Caviar, who died in August this year, with two-start maiden Ready For Caviar the only one of her foals who have raced that failed to win.

Persian Caviar was Black Caviar’s second-last foal with her only one to come a colt by The Autumn Sun who is now a yearling.
