Watch: Potential staying star explodes in Canterbury win

There is no doubt James McDonald is a champion rider.

Similary, Chris Waller as a trainer.

So when they produce one in a maiden over say 1550m that they really like, it generally wins easily.

And that’s what happened in the night meeting at Canterbury when MIGHTYBEEL (Savabeel-Super Power) just circled the field under Jay Mac and exploded away.

He was racing for just the 3rd time and the big baby who Jay Mac says has masses of talent, just won as he liked with his head on his chest.

And, this after being slowly away.

“He’s just a bog baby and he has no idea how good he is,” claimed McDonald.

“He is sooo timid and scared of horses and just immature. But he is a stayer of high talent in the making.”

He will now be aimed at the upcoming rich Gr 1 races including the Gr 1 ATC Derby in a couple of months.

The colt started at $2.60 tonight and yes, it was only a maiden, but the manner he rounded them up, and take into account too that as they were turning for home he shied away from an inside runner and lost a length, was frighteningly good.

Once balanced he just went whoosh winning eased down by nearly 5 lengths from his stablemates OSSABUCO (Mediaglia D’oro-Prompt) and BIG ANGEL (Zoustar-Locket) who has her foot on the till also.

Mightybeel cost $200,000 as a yearling when purchased out of the Karaka Yearling sale of 2019.

Off tonight’s performance he will win a lot more than that.
