Champion jockey James McDonald found himself unexpectedly dismounted from Cox Plate hopeful Via Sistina during trackwork at Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning.
The pair were preparing on the track in front of a sizeable crowd when a piece of equipment appeared to malfunction, leading to McDonald slipping off the side of the horse. Video footage shared on social media captured the moment of the fall, showing McDonald quickly getting back on his feet and walking away with the assistance of a few staff members.
Meanwhile, Via Sistina, one of the leading contenders for Saturdayโs $5 million Cox Plate and currently priced at $4.50 with betting sites, continued to gallop freely around the track without a rider.
The incident has now cast doubt over the mareโs participation in Australiaโs premier weight-for-age race, leaving connections and fans anxiously awaiting further updates on her condition and readiness for the weekend.
