John O’Sing trained Marway will now head to the paddock after completing a dominant hat trick of victories, with the trainer’s sights now set on the Capricorn Yearling Sales 3-Years-Old race in 2019. Showing plenty of promise as a 2-year-old, Marway has come into his own in recent starts, including a comprehensive win over 1300m with his time just 0.3 seconds outside Our Boy Malachi’s track record.
The locally bred gelding looks to be one of the brightest prospects coming out the North Queensland region, overcoming some slight issues as a 2-year-old.
“I’ve had him since day one and he’s always showed plenty. His first four jump outs he was never beat.” O’Sing said.
“Before he started in the big 2-year-old race (Capricorn Sales 2YO Classic), he had an accident with a water bucket clip and had an injury to his mouth so he was a very sore boy for a long time.”
“He had a couple of setbacks like that so we put him out after that race and he’s come back bigger and brighter than ever.”
So bright in fact, connections we’re offered almost $200,000 for the 3-year-old by a Hong Kong based bloodstock agent for the local star to race overseas, declining the offer to get the most out of their horse.
“We’re in for the long haul, they knocked back $180,000 for him so we’re going to try and keep him racing as long as possible” O’Sing said.
“To their credit, the boys said no and I think they’re quite happy to have a good horse to be honest.”
Marway’s current form evidently warrants a trip to town in the future, with a metropolitan start likely, pending his performance in the 3-year-old sales race. O’Sing’s star 3-year-old easily accounted for Darryl Hansen’s Lickety Lachie who went on to finish 2nd in a $20,000 maiden at the Gold Coast next start.
“By all means we’re going to take him there.” He said.
“Just at the moment I think he’s had enough. If I sent him to Brisbane now I don’t think we’d have enough time to give him a rest and bring him back for the sales race, at this time of the year I think the heat is a factor too.”
2019 looks to be a big year for the O’Sing stable, the trainer of Rockhampton Rocket Our Boy Malachi eyeing of more success with both Marway and the Group 1-performed Ragazzo Del Corsa, who is being aimed towards carnival time and touted as a possible Newmarket chance.
O’Sing also hinted on another possible star to join the stable with Marway’s full (Hemingway x Maredamah) sister recently broken in.
