Widden Stud has secured a stake in Group 1-winning colt Southport Tycoon, trained by Ciaron Maher, after buying into Bennett Racing’s promising son of Written Tycoon. The colt recently resumed racing with a fifth-place finish in the Group 3 Show County Quality at Randwick and is being targeted at major Group 1 races in Sydney and Melbourne, including the $10 million Golden Eagle.
Southport Tycoon’s next confirmed start is the Group 1 Manikato Stakes at The Valley. The acquisition came after a current owner reduced his share, allowing Widden Stud to join the ownership group, alongside Australian Bloodstock, which has also taken a minor stake.
Trainer Ciaron Maher is optimistic about the colt’s form, noting that Southport Tycoon has returned “bigger and stronger” and is thriving after his latest race. “He’s very keen to go to the Manikato,” Maher shared, highlighting the colt’s potential for a big spring campaign.
