Zac Lloyd set for second Melbourne Cup ride on Athabascan

Sydney’s champion apprentice Zac Lloyd has been confirmed to ride Athabascan in the 2024 Melbourne Cup. This will mark Lloyd’s second Melbourne Cup appearance, following his debut last year aboard Kalapour, where he finished 20th. Despite the result, Lloyd described his first Cup experience as unforgettable.

Athabascan, trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, is coming off an impressive victory in the ATC St Leger Stakes (2600m) at Randwick, which showcased his readiness for the 3200m Melbourne Cup. The six-year-old gelding will carry 52kg in the Cup, adding to his credentials as a strong contender after a runner-up finish in the Sydney Cup over the same distance.

Lloyd is confident in Athabascan’s ability to handle the Melbourne Cup’s demanding distance, citing the horse’s big frame, relaxed racing style, and ability to position himself well during races. “He’s the perfect horse for two miles,” Lloyd remarked, expressing optimism about their chances.

Trainer John O’Shea is equally confident, noting that Athabascan has come through his St Leger win in excellent condition and is primed for the Cup. “We’ve booked our jockey, Zac Lloyd, so we’re ready to go,” O’Shea confirmed, adding that the St Leger victory came as no surprise given the favourable conditions.
