Race 1. (23:30) Chesham Stakes (Listed) 1408m
Open race to start the final day. Landed with 13 La Guarida (Bet Now:Â $9.00), who comes here off the back of a sharp win over 1200m at Goodwood where she was near the speed throughout before taking the front and she maintained a safe margin to the line in getting the job done. The way she was strong late tells me 1400m is no issue and drawn out, right part of the track, she appeals.
16 Pearls And Rubies (Bet Now: $2.70) is 1/1 to start he career for Aidan O’Brien, the debut win coming two weeks ago at Navan over 1000m where she was off the speed in the run and was under riding a fair way out but she responded nicely under pressure and finished off her race with purpose to win. Jumps straight to 1400m but you do have to respect the placement of the stable.
8 Quatre Bras (Bet Now: $SP.00) has the 1400m run under the belt, which should hold him in good stead. That run was his debut, which came over 1400m at Yarmouth where he was near the speed and tried his guts out to get there but just couldn’t quite finish it off but stayed on to run third. With that run under the belt, I think he has to be here with a big shout.
Race 2. (00:05) Jersey Stakes (Group 3) 1408m
5 Covey (Bet Now: $3.80) is clearly on top for me. Team Gosden trains this colt, that is looking to make it four wins on the bounce. The latest win came over the mile at Haydock where he led throughout and he was the winner a long way out. He was trucking in the run before being clicked up by Dettori and he was strong in winning impressively. He’ll be strong at the end of 1400m and has a good racing style.
Beware the unbeaten horse so giving respect to 7 Enfjaar (Bet Now:Â $7.00) for Roger Varian. Narrow but solid debut winner at Newmarket back in October before being spelled. He resumed over the mile at Chelmsford on the Synthetic where he tracked the speed and was moving with purpose under Egan. He was the winner a fair way out and won accordingly. Clearly harder here, but as I said, beware the unbeaten horse.
10 Holloway Bay (Bet Now:Â $8.00) will welcome the massive drop in grade/depth. Thrown in the deep end when resuming in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and just struggled on the heavy ground after sitting on speed, tiring to finish down the track behind Chaldean. Should get firmer footing this time around and back to 1400m, he can run a much improved race.
Race 3. (00:40) Queen Elizabeth Ii Jubilee Stakes (Group 1) 1207m
You can make a strong case that 2 Artorius (Bet Now:Â $4.50) should have won this race last year, and IMO 12 months on, he is a much better horse. He had a fab prep during the Sydney Autumn, winning the Canterbury Stakes before a gutsy effort in the George Ryder behind a star, Anamoe. He will love a fast run 1200m, proven at the course and will be one of the strongest at the end.
Most regard Lucky Sweynesse as the best sprinter in the world and if indeed that is the case, then you have to respect 13 Wellington (Bet Now: $8.00). He is 2IC to Lucky Sweynesse in Hong Kong after once upon a time being the best sprinter in Hong Kong, but that has all changed with Lucky Sweynesse and his emergence. He’ll love 1200m on a firm deck and good lead that Ryan Moore has been booked to ride for a while.
If they go silly in front, look for 15 Sacred (Bet Now:Â $11.00) to sit back and launch at them late. I think she is a 1400m horse but a hard 1200m will see her be right there late IMO. Found a somewhat moderate Group lll Mares race over 1400m at Lingfield last time but she did what she had to do, drawing clear late and was sharp in getting the job done. Spots them a start but will be strong at the end.
Race 4. (01:20) Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2) 2405m
Hard to get away from 5 Hukum (Bet Now: $SP.00). He resumed over 2000m at Sandown and made a mess of them in an outstanding return, beating a classy animal in Desert Crown. Second up at 2400m looks an ideal set up for him, he’s got room for improvement and on a likely firm deck, he clearly rates highly against this lot. Keen on his chances.
8 Free Wind (Bet Now: $2.25) likely has eyes on the Pretty Polly but off the first up effort, she has to be respected here. She didn’t beat a great deal fresh at York in a Group ll but she was first up after nearly a year off and found plenty under Frankie to score. Might want one more and a rise in trip, but she’s a promising mare with good upside and will be strong late.
Great to see 3 Deauville Legend (Bet Now: $9.00) back at the races. He hasn’t raced since the Melbourne Cup where he was a heavily backed favourite but just didn’t run out the 3200m on the shifty ground but was as brave as ever when fourth to Gold Trip. I think 2400m on firmer footing is a big tick for him and ability wise, he is certainly up to this level.
Race 5. (02:00) Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap) 1207m
26 Juan Les Pins (Bet Now: $21.00) is worth a small each way ticket. He is a dry track specialist so if he gets a firm deck, he’s in with a big shout off a win at Nottingham where he was tardy away but was able to get a suck run out the back in the small field before angling clear and he finished off his race with purpose to win impressively. Likely concedes a start but will be launching at them late.
8 Orazio (Bet Now: $4.60) has come back a different and seemingly a much better horse for Charlie Hills. He is 2/2 this time in, the latest win coming at this track/distance where he was near the pace throughout before Buick clicked him up and in the end, he was quite dominant. More depth here, but hard to knock the way he’s going and Buick sticks, which is a good lead.
2 King’s Lynn (Bet Now: $23.00) has the King’s colours so he’ll be popular with punters and I do think 1000m up to 1200m is a big tick. The 1000m run came at Chester where he was on the back of speed and looked the winner the way he was going and did loom large when asked but was held late to run second. Back up in trip, has run well at Ascot previously, he’s a definite winning chance.
Race 6. (02:35) Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap) 2004m
6 Canute (Bet Now: $5.50) looks a very progressive animal for Aidan O’Brien and confident he can measure up against these despite coming off a maiden win, but the win was sharp. It came at Navan over 2000m where he was tardy to begin with but was able to get into a nice spot under Moore before going through his gears in the straight and was impressive the way he put them away. Harder here, but confident he has the upside/progression to measure up.
13 Knockbrex (Bet Now:Â $6.50) looks suited back to 2000m. He attempted to lead throughout over 2400m at York last time and did give a solid kick but he just found the trip a bridge too far and tired late to run fourth to Chesspiece. He has really good form lines around him, namely via Gregory, and back in trip, Frankie taking over, he appeals big time.
9 Cuban Dawn (Bet Now: $10.00) is still a maiden but is showing promise. He has placed his past two, the latest over the mile at Gowran Park where he tracked up the speed before angling clear and loomed large to win but just couldn’t quite get there when a narrow second to Nation’s Call. The rise to 2000m should be fine for him…not sure he wins, but one for wider multiples.
Race 7. (03:10) Queen Alexandra Stakes 4355m
1 Stratum (Bet Now: $5.50) looks the one to beat in the final race. Willie Mullins trains this veteran and did win the race last year, so it looks like he has been set for it again. He resumed over 2800m at Leopardstown where it pretty much looked like a prep run when down the track behind Yashin. That form has worked out well this week at Ascot and with the rise in trip, runs on the board, he’ll do me.
3 Dawn Rising (Bet Now: $3.00) has the Joseph O’Brien/Ryan Moore combination, and they combined to win a race last night so he is a gelding that should be respected. He resumed in the same race as Stratum mentioned above. He was off the speed and under pressure a fair way out but kept finding the line and was good late between runners to finish third. Like him up in trip and has more upside/progression than most.
5 Falcon Eight (Bet Now: $12.00) is a veteran for Dermott Weld who has seen better days but he does have class and that will carry him a long way. He ran fourth in this race last year and looks set for it again. He resumed in the Chester Cup and was just too bad to be true I thought, beaten a long way from home when beaten 30 lengths by Metier. If he runs up to his best, he’ll go close.
