‘Glorious Goodwood’ 2021 kicks off on Tuesday night, highlighted by the Goodwood Cup (3200m), featuring champion stayer Stradivarius.
Race 1. (22:50) Chesterfield Cup 1990m
I like 14 Migration (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) in the opener. First up since 2019 when resuming at Salisbury and I loved the way he closed off late after getting held up. Another 50m and he wins the race. Provided there is no second you syndrome, I think he’s the one they have to beat.
4 Maydanny (Bet Now: $7.00 TOP ODDS) hasn’t won since saluting in this race last year but I think he’s on track. Good in defeat at Sandown last time in what has turned out to be a decent form reference. Won’t mind a drop of rain to hit the track, will be out of trouble on speed and giving his all.
16 It’s Good To Laugh (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) only has a maiden win next to his name but he is a better horse than what that record suggests. Narrow second at Chester in a Class 2 a few weeks ago and back in trip, hard fit, I’m sure he will give a bold sight and a win won’t shock.
Race 2. (23:25) Vintage Stakes 1408m
1 Berkshire Shadow (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) picks himself here. 2/2 to start his career for Andrew Balding and looks an exciting prospect. He spanked them in the Coventry at Royal Ascot and I think he only has to hold that form to be winning again and confirming himself a rising star.
2 Lusail (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) looks the only other winning hope. Three wins from four starts to start his career, the latest win seeing him prove too good for a decent field in the July Stakes at Newmarket. Whether he’s good enough to beat Berkshire Shadow, not sure, but he has got talent.
3 Angel Bleu (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS) is on the quick back up after racing on Saturday at Ascot at Listed level when third. He ran behind Berkshire Shadow in the Coventry and didn’t measure up, so not sure he wins, but a first four threat.
Race 3. (00:00) Lennox Stakes 1408m
10 Space Blues (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) is a world class horse and I think he can remind the racing world of that with a win here. Like most, was keen on him at Meydan in the Al Quoz but didn’t fire. He won this race with such arrogance last year and I’ll bank on him repeating the dose.
12 Creative Force (Bet Now: $3.60 TOP ODDS) has been a revelation this season. That was confirmed when he won the Jersey at Royal Ascot. Then went to the July Cup and was enormous behind Starman, a possible Everest contender. If he’s got anything left in the tank, he will take beating here.
3 Happy Power (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS) is a track/distance winner that can bounce back. Far from disgraced in the Diamond Jubilee prior to racing in the Summer Mile where he was quite plain in a poor effort. Better suited back in trip and can definitely threaten with his best.
Race 4. (00:35) Goodwood Cup 3218m
9 Spanish Mission (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) just needs to run well here to book a start in the Melbourne Cup. I think he can win this. He was purchased over 12 months ago with the Melbourne Cup in mind and his form has been super, his latest run being a third in the Gold Cup. If there is a query, it will be if we get a drop of rain, because clearly he’s a dry track horse.
If you knew 10 Stradivarius (Bet Now: $2.70 TOP ODDS) would produce his best, he’d be a genuine $1.20-$1.30 pop. But, the jury is out off his Gold Cup run. Yes, wasn’t the best of steers from Frankie, but that said, the horse was never winning. Class is the big thing he has going for him.
7 Serpentine (Bet Now: $18.00 TOP ODDS) has the miles in the legs now and can run a much better race. Looked in need of the run fresh at Curragh. Then went to the Gold Cup and just didn’t have the stamina in the legs to go with them. He’s hard fit now and if he produced anything near his Derby win last year, he’s in with a shout.
Race 5. (01:10) Back To Goodwood Handicap 1005m
13 Rewaayat (Bet Now: $4.75 TOP ODDS) on top. Ran fourth in the Stewards Cup at this Carnival last year is a proven performer. Definite pass mark fresh at Newmarket, but thought he was a tad plain at Ascot last time. Perhaps second up syndrome? Have to wait and see, but I’m anticipating a third up bounce back.
8 King Of Stars (Bet Now: $4.75 TOP ODDS) has been great since joining the Appleby camp. Beat them impressively at Bath three back before a second at Beverley. Then had three months off before going to Newmarket with a narrow second. Looks targeted at this race and is hard to beat.
2 Jabbarockie (Bet Now: $9.50 TOP ODDS) could easily spank these if he’s right to go. Back to Handicap grade after contesting a Stakes race at Haydock back in May when down the track, but with excuses. If he’s right to go, he can win, and won’t mind some give in the track.
Race 6. (01:45) British Stallion Studs Ebf Maiden Stakes 1207m
I’ll take a punt with 7 Monet’s Sunrise (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS). Richard Hannon won this race in 2018 with a first starter, with Ryan Moore steering, and that is the scenario this gelding has. 95,000 Guineas purchase that is well related so there is enough around to suggest he will run a positive race.
9 Scattering (Bet Now: $3.25 TOP ODDS) has the Haggas/Marquand combo, so that commands immediate respect. Debuted last month at Newcastle and I thought it was a good effort given he didn’t seem 100% happy on the Synthetic. Better suited here and is a key threat.
4 Harb (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) is a market watch here. 110,000 Guineas purchase that is on debut and is closely related to several winners, a couple of which at Stakes level, so is bred to be a handy one and stable/jockey combo have had good previous success at this Carnival.
Race 7. (02:20) Unibet Fillies' Handicap 1609m
6 Anghaam (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) should be suited back to the mile. Impressive all the way aimed at the trip at Newmarket two back. Then stepped up to 2000m there and just couldn’t see it out. Back to the mile, she will land on speed and give a bold sight, with hard fitness under the belt.
9 Riknnah (Bet Now: $4.50 TOP ODDS) is better placed at this level. Put together a couple of sharp wins on the bounce prior to racing in a strong Class 2 at Newmarket where she failed to measure up. She can bounce back and run a positive race against this lot if the last run hasn’t busted her.
8 Nebulosa (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) deserves another chance. Thought the win first up was sharp to the eye and on the clock, but the two runs since have been plain. He does have Andrew Balding as the trainer and Oisin Murphy to steer, so he can easily bounce back against these.
Race 8. (02:50) World Pool Ebf Fillies' Handicap 1207m
4 Gellhorn (Bet Now: $3.25 TOP ODDS) for me in the get out. Tardy beginning again Newmarket last time out but she regathered herself and was much too good for them late in a good a win. Bit more depth to this line up, but she does have a good turn of foot and I think that will come to the fore here.
7 Lovely Breeze (Bet Now: $3.75 TOP ODDS) is a daughter of Sepoy for Hugo Palmer that ran second in that race mentioned above. She seemingly had every chance I thought but was no match for Gellhorn. She’s a genuine filly that puts herself near the speed and runner usual honest race.
1 Mountain Brave (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) was somewhat out of form but that all changed at Chester last time out, with sustained speed from the front coming to the fore in an impressive win. Can she repeat the dose? Only time will tell, but a repeat effort will have her in the mix.
