The Goodwood Carnival continues on Wednesday with an eight race card, highlighted by the Group l Nassau Stakes (1990m) for the Fillies and Mares.
Race 1. (22:10) Mirabeau Hcp 1000m
Forgive a horse for one poor run and I’ll be doing that with 5 Caspian Queen (Bet Now: $4.20). Charged home late to just miss out on the win at this track/distance two back before going to 1200m at Newmarket and on face value, was disappointing behind Dark Regard. Off her effort here two back, she’s the one to beat.
1 Electric Ladyland (Bet Now: $6.00) has her share of talent for Archie Watson. Impressive winner three back at this track/distance before failing at Royal Ascot. Came back in depth at Windsor and bounce back to winning form. Building up a pretty good record is this girl and Hollie Doyle seems to get on with her very well.
2 Show Me Show Me (Bet Now: $7.00) is a son of Showcasing who has showed talent at stages during his career and does find a winnable race here if he ran up to anything near his best. Comes here off the back of a fifth at Pontefract where he was tardy to begin with and I think that cost him a couple of lengths in the run to the line. Best is good enough.
Race 2. (22:45) You're On Hcp 2000m
6 Zabeel Champion (Bet Now: $5.50) looks one of the better bets on the card. Mark Johnston trained son of Poet’s Voice that has won his past two, the latest coming over 2000m at Newmarket when leading throughout and what I liked is that when pressure was applied, he found plenty and on the line was edging clear. Gets Ryan Moore aboard and potentially a soft lead.
10 Magnetised (Bet Now: $3.25) is the one with the most upside and progression given he’s second up at career start number three. Resumed in a strong Novice race at Thirsk and just missed out on the win when second to Ilaraab. Stable has had a good Carmival to date and this guy looks like he’ll eat up the 2000m.
3 Bright Melody (Bet Now: $11.00) is a Charlie Appleby trained son of Dubawi that comes here off the back of a last start third at Listed level at Longchamp in a field of four. It was a 500m dash for cash and he couldn’t quite go with the leader/winner but was sound in defeat. Have to respect the stable and looks a bit of value at double figures.
Race 3. (23:15) Richmond Stks 1200m
Going with 7 Yazaman (Bet Now: $2.50) for William Haggas and Tom Marquand. Strong debut winner at Yarmouth before bumping into a potential star in Tactical at his next two, firstly in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot before going to the July Stakes at Newmarket. Tactical isn’t here, depth isn’t as strong, he gets his chance to win.
4 Qaader (Bet Now: $4.50) is the interesting one. Couldn’t have been anymore impressive on debut at Newbury before a game second in the Coventry at Royal Ascot. He then went to the July Stakes at Newmarket when sent around favourite and I’m not sure what happened, but he was very plain behind Tactical. Can bounce back though and you’re getting a much better price than last time.
1 Admiral Nelson (Bet Now: $6.00) looks the only other winning chance. Debuted with a slick win at the Curragh, which ensured he went around favourite in the Coventry and you’d have to mark him down as disappointing behind Nando Parrado. Interestingly has been kept on ice since that run, so will be interesting to see what the market does.
Race 4. (23:45) Gordon Stks 2400m
Fascinating edition of the Gordon. I think the one on the up is 1 Al Aasy (Bet Now: $5.50), who has won his past two. Gave them an absolute spanking two back at Newmarket over 2400m before stepping up to 2600m there in the Bahrain Trophy and duly spanking them again. He’s heading in the right direction this guy and I think will take a power of beating.
2 English King (Bet Now: $2.20) has to be given another chance. He was well fancied in the Derby but it’s been well documented what happened there. Those behind the leader and eventual winner were asleep and Serpentine pinched it. English King did make ground late but was never ever a winning factor. Frankie won’t be asleep here.
5 Mogul (Bet Now: $5.50) is an Aidan O’Brien trained three year old that also comes through the Derby won by Serpentine. He was another that was a victim of the riders being asleep. Never a winning chance but found the line okay. With Santiago being just fair in the Goodwood Cup, could Mogul put his cards on the table as a St Leger horse?
Race 5. (00:15) Nassau Stakes 2000m
Back to her own sex, in the corner of 3 Magic Wand (Bet Now: $4.75), who comes here off the back of a solid fourth in the Eclipse behind Ghaiyyath, with of course Enable franking that form last weekend. Magic Wand is very effective on firm ground and back to F&M grade, Frankie on, gee I think she’ll take some beating.
Just how good is 6 Fancy Blue? (Bet Now: $3.25) Far from disgraced two back in the Irish 1000 Guineas before going to the Prix De Diane at Chantilly when near the speed and lapping up the extra ground when kicking on strongly to get the job done. Interesting that Ryan Moore rides this girl over Magic Wand, so no surprise to see Fancy Blue popular with that factor in mind.
1 Deidre (Bet Now: $6.00) is the reigning champ from this race last year and looks spot on to defend her crown. Finished fifth in the Eclipse behind Ghaiyyath but did stick to the task really well and was far from disgraced in defeat, her first run since late February. Back to Mares grade, proven big time performer, hard to beat.
Race 6. (00:45) Gusbourne Nursery 1400m
Hard seeing 1 William Bligh (Bet Now: $2.80) getting beat. He has got better with each run under the belt and comes here in winning form after bolting up at Haydock, showing a touch of class in putting them away. Form around him reads well, draws a soft gate and I think will take a power of beating in what looks, overall, a moderate race.
2 Running Back (Bet Now: $5.50) is the key and I think only threat to William Bligh. Comes through a 1200m contest at Kempton Park when a bit flat footed when the sprint went on but picked up and surged hard late to just miss out on the win. Off that, he’ll eat up 1400m, got upside to come and given I think it’s a two horse race, he is value.
3 Mark Of The Man (Bet Now: $13.00) is a stablemate of Running Back. Doubt he can beat him home here, but the one thing he does have going for him is a 1400m lead up win, which was a strong one at Chepstow, albeit the margin was narrow. Has that 1400m run under the belt and hard experience, which should hold him in good stead.
Race 7. (01:20) Mdn Fillies Stks 1400m
Bit of guessing here but I’ll have 7 Spirit Of Bermuda (Bet Now: $7.00) on top. This is a daughter of Twilight Son that is on debut for William Haggas, with Tom Marquand to steer. This girl cost 62,000 Pounds and is closely related to several decent gallopers. Been early market support, which is a positive sign, and stable/jock combo are always to be respected.
Of the raced brigade, 8 Teodolina (Bet Now: $2.50) is the pick. Richard Hannon trained daughter of Kodiac that debuted over 1200m at Newmarket a few weeks ago. Looked very raw and new to the caper early but once she balanced up, she switched on and closed off nicely to run third. Has the run under the belt, up to 1400m, Moore sticks, very likeable.
3 Iconic Queen (Bet Now: $11.00) is the knockout chance. Was kept safe in betting when debuting at Kempton Park. Didn’t immediately pick up when asked, but the last 75-100m and through the line was the best part of her work, really finishing off nicely. Off that effort, she’ll eat up the 1400m here and stable is going well.
Race 8. (01:55) Tatler Nursery 1000m
Stradivarius was the good thing of the Carnival and saluted. The second best looks to be 2 Winter Power (Bet Now: $1.80). She couldn’t have been anymore impressive in winning last time out at Redcar over 1000m. Led throughout and Allan didn’t really get stuck into her at all, winning by five and running sharp time. Only has to hold that to win here. Any improvement from that and good luck to the rest.
4 Acklam Express (Bet Now: $6.00) is a nice horse on the up. Not sure he beat a great deal when winning at Hamilton Park last time out but loved the way he picked up late under pressure and was strong to the line in winning. He’s got more to come and looks above average. But I think he’s bumping into a really good one in Winter Power.
Team Crisford are flying at the moment and they have 3 Different Face (Bet Now: $9.50) engaged here. Solid enough on debut at Yarmouth before going to Lingfield where she found the front and at that track, being on speed is an advantage, which she did and was too good. Harder here, but the stable shouldn’t be totally dismissed.
