Belated birthday present for the Queen

Crowds have flocked around the winnerโ€™s enclosure at Newbury in a scene more familiar with Royal Ascot after Call To Mind gave the Queen a late birthday present with victory on debut.

Although she failed to see her silks carried to glory at the track 24 hours earlier on her 91st birthday, Her Majesty enjoyed a much more successful time on her return to the Berkshire course with the three-year-old winning over a mile (1600m).

Despite being one of the first to come under pressure, the William Haggas-trained colt, who holds entries in both the Dante and Derby, warmed to the task to come through runners and oblige by a neck under Ryan Moore.

The 6-4 favourite was introduced at 16-1 for the Derby by Paddy Power.

โ€œHe did very well and I am sure he will improve for a step up in trip,โ€ Haggas said.

โ€œI think the Dante might be a bit too early for him. I think we will have to regroup and see where we go, as winning a maiden first time out throws you immediately into a better-class race.

โ€œWe donโ€™t get many chances to have the Queen at the races. For me personally itโ€™s a great thrill to win a race for her when she is present.โ€
