David Eustace claims first Hong Kong win with Swift Ascend

British trainer David Eustace secured his first win as a sole trainer in Hong Kong with Swift Ascend in the Class 4 Harbour View Handicap (1200m) at Happy Valley. The victory marked a significant milestone for the 32-year-old, who previously trained in partnership with Ciaron Maher in Australia, where he achieved over 1,000 wins.

“It’s obviously a great thrill… I’m just delighted for the team,” Eustace said, reflecting on the achievement. He also noted the emotional significance of having his cousin, Charlie Oughton, present for the moment.

Swift Ascend, formerly known as Citizenship in Australia, was ridden by Zac Purton, who praised the horse’s development, despite some greenness. “The blinkers really helped,” Purton commented after his third win of the evening.

The night also saw notable victories from Jamie Richards, Frankie Lor, and Pierre Ng, highlighting a competitive start to the season. Hong Kong racing continues at Sha Tin on October 13 with the G2 Sha Tin Trophy.
