A six-week break proved no problem for Fix as she outslogged a good field in the Group Two Eight Carat Classic at Ellerslie on Wednesday.
Fix franked the form which saw her run third in the Group One 1000 Guineas at Riccarton, sitting outside the leader for jockey Vinny Colgan on a wet track and outslogging favourite Soriano.
“She went home in the paddock for two weeks of that so it’s a good effort,” her Matamata trainer Ken Kelso said.
“I thought she worked hard from an outside barrier but Vinny wanted to go forward. She overraced too, so it was a good, gutsy effort.”
The victory took Fix to second in the Filly of the Year series and she will take the lead if she wins the Group Two Royal Stakes (2000m) back at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day but Kelso wouldn’t commit her to starting.
“I’m concerned about the way she overraced. I always thought a mile might be her limit, but we’ll sit down and see,” he said.
“I never make decisions on raceday. She’ll tell me tomorrow what we do or the day after.”
Colgan said Fix was travelling like a winner most of the way.
“She really felt like she was in charge underneath me. I felt like when I let her go she was going to give me plenty.”
