The much-travelled Mount Athos may have run his last race with trainer Marco Botti scrapping a scheduled return at Chester.
The eight-year-old, who finished third in the 2013 Melbourne Cup behind Fiorente and Red Cadeaux, was being readied for a tilt at the Ormonde Stakes.
He has not been seen on a racecourse since he won the Listed Aston Park Stakes at Newbury a year ago.
With his outing at Chester now scrapped a decision is expected to be made over the next few days whether the Dr Marwan Koukash-owned gelding is to be retired.
“We will check him next week,” Botti said.
“It was always the plan to bring him back for Chester but that has come too soon for him. He is a horse that has had plenty of issues and we need to speak to his owner whether that is it and we call it a day.”
