Mount Athos may have run his last race

The much-travelled Mount Athos may have run his last race with trainer Marco Botti scrapping a scheduled return at Chester.

The eight-year-old, who finished third in the 2013 Melbourne Cup behind Fiorente and Red Cadeaux, was being readied for a tilt at the Ormonde Stakes.

He has not been seen on a racecourse since he won the Listed Aston Park Stakes at Newbury a year ago.

With his outing at Chester now scrapped a decision is expected to be made over the next few days whether the Dr Marwan Koukash-owned gelding is to be retired.

β€œWe will check him next week,” Botti said.

β€œIt was always the plan to bring him back for Chester but that has come too soon for him. He is a horse that has had plenty of issues and we need to speak to his owner whether that is it and we call it a day.”
