$1.3 Million purchase Vandeek, trained by Simon & Ed Crisford, started off his career in spectacular fashion at Nottingham in the UK overnight in a 1223m maiden.
The son of Havana Grey got upset pre race and then in the stalls. He missed the kick by several lengths, far from ideal for a horse on debut, but he quickly regathered himself to make headway throughout before taking the lead at the furlong pole (200m out) and maintaining a margin on his rivals to justify tag as $2 favourite.
“I followed the horse I want to follow,” Jockey Andrea Atzeni told Racing TV.
“When I let him down, he dropped down a gear, he ran a little bit green in front but hit the line quite nicely.”
