Jockey James McDonald admitted to some pre-race nerves as the 2023 Cox Plate winner appeared a little edgy under the Meydan lights. However, once the gates opened, McDonald showcased his composure, guiding the star galloper to a dominant performance.
The race took a dramatic turn when early leader Measured Time tragically sustained a significant injury and was euthanised. Despite the unexpected pace scenario, McDonald remained unflustered, avoiding panic even as Measured Time led by a considerable margin. Channeling the poise of a world-class rider, McDonald timed Romantic Warrior’s challenge perfectly, unleashing a devastating finishing burst to power past rivals, including the Simon and Ed Crisford-trained Poker Face, who finished second.
Romantic Warrior’s triumph in Dubai marks his eighth consecutive win, a streak that began with his unforgettable victory at The Valley 15 months ago. Since then, the champion gelding has showcased his talent on the international stage, with wins in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and now Dubai.
