Minimum weights in most handicap races will rise a kilo from January next year in one of several changes ushered in at a meeting of the Australian Racing Board on Thursday.

The ARB agreed to increase the minimum riding weight in general handicap races from 53kg to 54kg and the minimum topweight from 58kg to 59kg.

Other changes include:

* While minimum weights for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups will remain at 50kg, they will rise from 51kg to 52kg for all other Group One handicaps on the flat.

* Minimum topweight for Group Ones and two-year-old handicaps will go from 57kg to 58kg.

* Group Two races will have the minimum weight put up a kilo to 53kg.

* The minimum topweight at declaration of acceptances will increase from 57kg to 58kg.

The changes were made following consultation with several stakeholders including the Australian Jockeys’ Association and will come into effect on January 1.

The Board decided against altering the weight-for-age scale.
