The 2022 calendar year for WA racing kicks off this Saturday with Perth Cup Day at Ascot, a bumper ten race program with quality. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Perth Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the Perth Cup
Race 1. (14:16) Tabtouch Handicap (0MW) 1100m
Market will be the guide here with several key chances resuming bit on top is 2 Wine Night (Bet Now: $6.50). She is a mare who does tend to save her best for when she is produced fresh so like her first up here in what is a thin 0MW race. Trialled well behind a well performed animal, Billy Ain’t Silly, which reads well for this. Hopefully the market says she’s ready.
1 Express Time (Bet Now: $5.50) is a daughter of War Chant that resumes for Neville Parnham. She hasn’t raced since August 21 when down the track behind the Stakes class galloper Iseered Iseered, which clearly is A1 for a race like this. No trials to get ready, so again, market will be your friend re fitness levels.
7 Dark City (Bet Now: $14.00) is an interesting runner. Formerly with Anne King, he now finds himself with Tiarnna Robertson. Hasn’t raced since September 15 when far from disgraced in defeat at Belmont behind Double Jeopardy. Has a soft gate to do no work and his best can see him be dangerous.
Race 2. (15:05) Magic Millions Plate 1100m
I’m with 3 Gold Keeper (Bet Now: $7.50) in what looks a solid race for the juveniles. David Harrison trains this colt, who has had two trials to get ready for start one, the latest seeing him win in impressive fashion at Lark Hill over 950m. Paul Harvey rode in that trial and he sticks for the debut, which is a good lead.
6 Costume Party (Bet Now: $2.60) should appreciate the extra 100m. Ran over 1000m here two weeks ago and closed off her race strongly, but couldn’t get past a pretty sharp youngster in Revitup. All three runs have come at 1000m and is racing now as if 1100m suits. Hard to beat.
1 Sunplay (Bet Now: $20.00) can be an improver at odds. Debuted in the Revitup race mentioned above. He was tardy to begin with, back last in the run and never really a threat, but his finale was sound I thought. The tempo, you don’t think, will be as brutal here, so he can sit closer in the run and be strong at the end.
Race 3. (15:45) Three: Seppelt "The Drives" Plate 1000m
1 He’s A Sizzler (Bet Now: $4.00) is a beauty for the Dan Morton camp. Three weeks between runs since producing an electric finale from off the speed to win over 1100m here in a great return. Back to 1000m I find interesting but the speed will be on and he’ll get his chance to launch at them late.
2 Beads (Bet Now: $1.70) is a Steve Wolfe trained gelding that is three weeks between runs since a strong win at this track/distance when smashed in betting and duly saluting in impressive fashion. Good test for him here against a horse of the quality of He’s A Sizzler but confident he can measure up.
4 Forever Autumn (Bet Now: $26.00) is a very interesting runner. His two runs back from a spell have been intriguing. Wide no cover fresh against the older horses before going to the Placid Ark where he looked to be trucking but couldn’t get a run in the straight. Back to this sort of level, back to 1000m, I’d watch the market.
Race 4. (16:25) Ascend Sales Trophies Handicap (66+) 1000m
4 Acromantula (Bet Now: $2.15) only just got nabbed on the line in a good quality race last time out. He finds a very winnable race here and there doesn’t look to be a lot of speed so he should be able to dictate the race and be very hard to run down.
2 This’ll Testya (Bet Now: $8.00) looks one of the hardest to beat. Sat near the speed in the race mentioned above won by Olga Luisa. She tried hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when third. That was her first run in a month and I think back on a bending track is a big tick for her.
7 Weaponson (Bet Now: $15.00) is a watch from a market and yard perspective. Formerly with David Harrison, he is having his first run for Lindsey Smith. His recent form was just fair but IMO he gets a stable upgrade along with a jockey upgrade, so it wouldn’t shock me to see him run an improved race.
Race 5. (17:05) Amelia Park Handicap (1MW) 1400m
2 Island Missile (Bet Now: $9.00) is flying for the Gangemi camp but his racing pattern is letting him down. Just spotted them way too much head start last time out over this track/distance but you had to like the way he finished his race off behind impressive winner The Great One. If he can sit a pair or two closer in the run, he’ll take beating.
1600m back to 1400m I don’t like for 11 Memorable Miss (Bet Now: $9.00) but she has the Team Williams polish and they have done the drop back in distance set up successfully in recent weeks. This mare was a strong winner over the mile here four weeks ago, with CJP getting the best out of her in a driving go. She’ll be strong late.
9 Cheval De Vega (Bet Now: $12.00) seems to be loving life with Meryl Hayley. 2/2 for the stable, both wins coming at Belmont and each time she has been dominant in the run to the line. The gate does makes things tricky for this gelding, but hard to knock the way he is racing at the moment.
Race 6. (17:45) Summer Scorcher 1000m
10 The Front Bar (Bet Now: $2.80) is a horse I could see measuring up in Melbourne. She is a serious, serious talent for Adam Durrant. Last time that was thought about for a Durrant runner was This’ll Testya and she has battled ever since. Touch wood, The Front Bar won’t follow that path because she is 3/3 this time in and the latest win, over 1000m here, was just dynamic. She’s a rising star of WA racing IMO and wins again.
6 Miss Conteki (Bet Now: $2.60) is a quality sprinting mare for Simon Miller that resumes. Hasn’t raced since October 9 at this track/distance when back off the speed and charging late when a narrow second to Hot Zed. No trial to get ready, but she is very reliable and loves the 1000m.
3 Gemma’s Son (Bet Now: $7.00) will need luck from the gate but if he does, he’s right in this. Be forgiving of his first up effort when wide no cover on speed and tiring late in a run that did have merit to it. Gets a big jockey upgrade and has upside, plus the class to take this out.
Race 7. (18:25) Mumm Champagne Handicap (66+) 1600m
4 Ginger Flyer (Bet Now: $4.00) looks a safe option. Been up a while for Simon Miller but seems to be enjoying the workload. Three weeks between runs since racing over 1500m here when getting a suck run behind the speed and tried hard, but was no match for a quality animal, God Has Chosen. That form reads well for this and hopefully she can be ridden more positively.
8 Em Tee Aye (Bet Now: $4.60) is bursting to win a race for Trevor Matthews. Three weeks between runs when racing over 1400m here a fortnight ago when back, wide with cover, and chased strongly when third to Beat The Bro. 1600m is the query, but the claim helps and overall, this race isn’t strong.
2 Blinder (Bet Now: $23.00) should appreciate a rise in trip. Comes through the Beat The Bro race mentioned above where he did make ground from off the speed but was never really a threat. Getting towards peak fitness and from gate one, should get run of the race. Knockout hope.
Race 8. (19:05) La Trice Classic 1800m
5 Chili Is Hot (Bet Now: $7.00) should love the rise to 1800m. Three weeks between runs since a strong win over the mile here where she was just too good for an in form Proconsent, holding that horse comfortably on the line. Proven at 2000m+ so 1800m here no issue and is hard to beat.
2 Bam’s On Fire (Bet Now: $11.00) is flying without winning for Neville Parnham. She has come through all the traditional Mares races, the latest being the Starstruck and she was good from the back behind Beret. If she can get a drag into the race and be within range on the turn, she can win.
11 Jadavi (Bet Now: $61.00) has done a super job at her past couple for Ian Shield. Her racing pattern isn’t the best but it hasn’t mattered her past couple with a couple of strong wins. Clearly a tougher assignment here, but hard to knock the way she is racing, so I’m including her.
Race 9. (19:45) Perth Cup 2400m
2 Platoon (Bet Now: $11.00) each way for me. He has looked an ideal Perth Cup candidate for a few runs now and that was confirmed last start in the Ted Van Heemst when a strong second to Regal Power, who would be $1.10 against this lot. Nothing from that race running here will turn the tables and IMO that is the best form reference.
12 Midnight (Bet Now: $3.60) Blue has been set for this race all prep and even with no Pike, he has to be respected. Made a sustained run in the ATA last time out and that effort just old late when third to Stafford’s Lad. The big tick for him is that the Bar Plates are off, suggesting his feet are in good order.
If this becomes a proper 2400m contest then 15 Stafford’s Lad (Bet Now: $6.00) comes right into play. The early pressure Midnight Blue applied in the ATA certainly helped set up the race for this guy and he was able to finish over the top. Does no work from the gate and should be strong at the end.
Race 10. (20:20) Crown Perth Handicap (72+) 1200m
2 Billy Ain’t Silly (Bet Now: $11.00) on top in the get out. Colin Webster trains this gelding, who resumes. Hasn’t raced since June 19 at Belmont when attempting to lead throughout in the Belmont Guineas but found the mile a bit much and tired late to run fourth. Has trialled up quite well to get ready and maps super from the draw.
11 Trevern (Bet Now: $10.00) has been an absolute revelation this time in. Jim Taylor trained gelding that is just under a month between runs since a strong on speed win over 1100m when there to be beaten but finding under pressure and kicked hard to win. Good test here, but think he can measure up.
10 Reign Of Fire (Bet Now: $7.50) will be hard to beat if he can use the inside gate. Resumed behind Son Son two weeks back at this track/distance and his finale from near last in the run was excellent in a good return. If he can hold a forward spot from the better barrier, he’ll take beating.
