A strong card of racing has been assembled for Pinjarra this Saturday for Magic Millions Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:53) Peel Thunder Good Friday Maiden 1500m
Siding with 1 Tow Rope (Bet Now: $2.80) in the opener. This bloke has been around the block a couple of times but has been close a couple of times, the latest coming over 1400m at Ascot when attempting to lead all the way and just feeling the pinch late. With a more conservative steer here, he’ll be more effective.
2 Vagabond Bay (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Dick Turpin gelding who comes through that 1400m race that Tow Rope contested and I thought his effort from the back was very good, closing off with real purpose late to just miss. He’s flying, and deserves a win, but the wide gate is a slight worry. If Kirby can get three wide cover, he’ll take some beating.
8 Side Ways Syd (Bet Now: $16.00) is a six year old gelding having just his second career outing. Unwanted in betting when debuting over 1400m at Bunbury but I thought he was real eye catcher late when a close up third to Everymile A Memory. Bigger track and extra 100m looks ideal, should have natural upside and for mine he is the clear overs.
Race 2. (16:33) G Force Printing Handicap (66+) 2000m
2 At The Ready (Bet Now: $2.70) just looks to pick himself to my eye. Adam Durrant trained stayer who is three weeks between runs since racing at Ascot where he looked a good thing on paper and aided by a peach from Pike, that’s how it panned out as he let down powerfully to score. Can only see upside.
9 Sandalwood (Bet Now: $3.00) is on the seven day back up for the Fred Kersley team after racing over 1800m at Ascot last Saturday were nothing really went right for her as she got too far back and Parnham really couldn’t do much but her finale was excellent. Think the rise in trip looks ideal and I like her on the turnaround.
11 Summit Trail (Bet Now: $14.00) comes through the same race that Sandalwood had no luck in. This one attempted to lead all the way and I thought he was given every chance on speed to do so. Just didn’t quite have the turn of foot and settled for a narrow second. Looks to get a soft lead again so a place chance.
Race 3. (17:13) Thoroughbred Breeders WA Pearl Classic (66+) 1400m
1 Royal Missile (Bet Now: $2.30) has to carry the top weight but I think she’s the safe play here. On the quick back up for the Simon Miller camp after racing last Saturday at Ascot where she scored a super win. I say super because there was a clear bias towards those on speed and she overcame it. Should get a lovely run from the gate and rates highly.
12 Show Honey (Bet Now: $4.80) is six weeks between runs for the Adam Durrant camp after racing over 1200m at Ascot on New Years Day where she was a hard luck tale. Was appearing to travel sweetly just off the pace but got checked at a vital stage and lost all hope. Goes wel fresh and draws to get a sweet run.
3 Top Of The Class (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Michael Lane trained mare who has had little to no luck this time in. She ran over 1100m at Ascot a fortnight back and again Lady Luck wasn’t on her side as she got badly held up with plenty to offer, which has been the norm this prep. If the breaks go her way, she can win for sure.
Race 4. (17:50) Sign Strategy Handicap (78+) 1600m
9 Oliver’s Travels (Bet Now: $2.70) is a very promising galloper for the Simon Miller team who is three weeks between runs since scoring a narrow but impressive win over 1500m at Ascot. I think a strong mile is my query with him, but I like has the freshness in the legs and one thing he does have is a turn of foot.
6 Eleven Seconds (Bet Now: $4.50) had admirers in betting when resuming over 1400m at Ascot a fortnight back and the punters got it spot on. He sat wide no cover for the trip yet cruised to them on the turn and put them away rather impressively for a dominant resumption. Is a winner second up, likes Pinjarra, so he has things going for him again.
7 Ripper Rio (Bet Now: $6.00) was a heavily backed favourite when resuming in the Mungrup Stud at Mount Barker but he let the punters down with a midfield effort behind Red Ora, but I think you have to be forgiving of that run because they did walk midrace and he was out the back. Should get tempo here and Pike sticks.
Race 5. (18:20) Sound Telegraph Handicap (1MW) 1600m
Taking a chance on 15 Stoicism (Bet Now: $7.50). He was completely unwanted in betting when resuming last Wednesday at Ascot but he defied the market expectation, got the 1/1 and charged home late to grab a rather impressive win. Interesting to note that Pike takes the ride, which may be a lead. I’ll be in his corner.
12 Bachelor’s Prospect (Bet Now: $15.00) could add some value here. He ran over the mile at Ascot last Wednesday and just got too far back in a slowly run affair, but you had to like the way he closed off late when fourth to Friar Away. I think the bigger track here at Pinjarra will really suit this bloke and he draws to sit much closer in the run.
2 Jester Rock (Bet Now: $16.00) is racing really well at the moment for the Steve Wolfe team. He ran over 1500m on his home track at Albany where he had the 1/1 and tried very hard but had to settle for a close second to Rowie. Convinced he is going well and he gets a great chance here for mine, provided he gets cover.
Race 6. (18:55) Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic 1200m
4 Kiss The Breeze (Bet Now: $1.85) does look the obvious and a standout. Very good filly for the Adam Durrant team who resumed at Ascot a fortnight back where she looked an absolute moral but punters did shy late, thinking fitness would be an issue. It was, but she won and was comfortable in doing so. Should improve big time off that.
2 Platoon (Bet Now: $3.60) is a Playing God colt first up for the Neville Parnham team. This bloke kicked off his career with two runs in the Spring and placed both times, with signs there suggesting he would improve with the prep under the belt. Recent trial win was outstanding and he looks ready to go for the resumption.
3 Valour Road (Bet Now: $6.50) is the big watch here. Simon Miller trained gelding by Frost Giant who is on debut. Hard race to go in at start one but he has really looked the part in two trials leading, winning both comfortably and running good time each morning. I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t measure up here.
Race 7. (19:25) Magic Millions WA 3YO Trophy 1200m
6 Street Fury (Bet Now: $4.20) on top for me in a ripping edition of the 3YO Magic Millions. This filly is four weeks between runs for the Pearce team since winning impressively over 1200m at Ascot, charging home from the back under Pike. But if depth here, and drawn awkwardly, but her turn of foot is explosive.
2 Epic Grey (Bet Now: $2.45) is a beauty for the Lindsey Smith team. Just doesn’t know how to run a bad race. Had every reason to first up a fortnight back at Ascot given he was wide no cover on speed yet he kept finding and was only nabbed in the last stride. Should get a better run here and the blinkers are back on.
1 Cognac (Bet Now: $6.00) is a speed demon for Paul Jordan who will give a great sight and look the winner at some stage. He took on the older horses over 1100m at Ascot a fortnight back and did a ripping job to stick on like he did when third to Gee Boss. That form does read well for this. Last 50-100m will be his test.
Race 8. (20:00) Darling View Thoroughbreds Handicap (72+) 1000m
11 Jingtang (Bet Now: $6.00) on top in the get out. Chris Gangemi trains this bloke who resumed down the straight a tick over two weeks back and was dominant in winning under Peter Knuckey, finding the best part of the track and finishing off strongly for a dominant win. Draws well again and hard to ignore the win.
2 Gee Boss (Bet Now: $2.30) was a tragedy beaten here two back when getting no luck at all via an awful steer. Bad luck was taken out of the equation at Ascot two weeks ago where he was up on speed, perhaps ridden upside down, but he still proved too good. Much more dynamic when he has cover and a patient ride. If the breaks go his way, he’ll go close.
13 Prize Catch (Bet Now: $13.00) resumed over 1100m at Ascot two weeks back where the market flucs said he’d need the run and that is how it panned out when he got back and battled away okay without really threatening behind Dutch Spy. Does go well second up and has performed nicely down the Pinjarra straight before.
