A strong card of racing has been assembled for Caulfield this Saturday, with good depth right across the board. The weather is overcast, the track is soft (6) and the rail is out twelve metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (11:50) Ladbrokes Back Yourself Plate 1100m
Keen to see what 6 That Song (Bet Now: $4.35) does. Your Song gelding on debut for the Hayes/Dabernig team and he looked very good to my eye earlier this week in a jump out at Werribee. Led, looked to do it nicely under no pressure and wasn’t extended in the straight when running third. No depth at all to this race, so I’ll be surprised if he didn’t run well.
1 Rock Hard (Bet Now: $2.65) is the unknown I think. 2/2 for Byron Cozamanis and has done a really good job in both wins. Toughed it out to win on the cow paddock aka Seymour before going to Bendigo where he took on a handy bunch and won really well I thought. Trained on the track and should run well with the hard fitness.
5 So Magnifique (Bet Now: $7.00) is a Magnus colt on debut for Mitch Beer. This bloke looked to trial up well enough on Monday at Cranbourne when winning his respective trial in good style under Ethan Brown. As I said, there is no depth to this race at all and he won’t have to be a star to figure prominently in the finish.
Race 2. (12:30) Le Pine Funerals Handicap 1100m
She’s not one of mine, but in an awful race, I’ll go the way of 4 Selenia (Bet Now: $10.00). Wasn’t too bad first up here behind Crystal Fountain before racing down the straight on Anzac Day and not handling the course I think behind Milwaukee. Back Caulfield, draws to park off a good speed and Parnham steers.
1 Sullivan Bay (Bet Now: $10.00) will love returning to Caulfield. She comes through the Milwaukee race mentioned above and just forget she went around. Never suited at all an d never looked likely. Think she holds a forward spot from the good draw here and Cory Parish rides her better than anyone else for mine.
9 Jocasta (Bet Now: $11.00) is definitely one mare who will love the 1100m. Loomed as a threat over 1200m in the Creativity race but just found the six furlongs a stretch when a close up fourth. Her best chance of winning is cuddled off a fast speed and ambushing late. If that eventuates, I think she has a ripping chance.
Race 3. (13:05) Tile Importer Handicap 1600m
9 My Paisann (Bet Now: $4.25) for me. He rises a fair bit in grade and depth but is racing well enough for mine. Looked the winner last time out at this track/distance but had no answers for the finale produced by Lizard Island. He has had a couple of hard mile runs the belt now so he should be hard fit, ready to go.
No surprise to see 4 Kenjorwood (Bet Now: $3.05) popular. He’ll give a great sight on speed for Daniel Moor. Gave a stack of cheek on speed during the Warrnambool Carnival over 1400m but just petered late when fourth to Arkham Knight. Up to the mile is perfect, gets map favours and has upside to come.
2 He Or She (Bet Now: $9.00) is a Hayes/Dabernig runner that had trialled up well prior to resuming in the Victoria Handicap over 1400m here where he got back off the speed and couldn’t dash with them behind stablemate Fastnet Tempest. Hasn’t done much for a while, but he does find a very winnable race here if he found his best form.
Race 4. (13:40) Rod Fenwick Handicap (78) 1400m
5 Platinum Angel (Bet Now: $2.90) was backed off the map a fortnight back at Morphettville over 1400m and despite an absolute peach of a ride from Harry Coffey, she couldn’t quite see out the seven furlongs when bloused late by stablemate Peaceful State. Drops back to her own age/sex, should take some beating.
6 Honey Esprit (Bet Now: $3.45) was well liked by punters when racing during the Warrnambool Carnival and thanks to an absolute peach of a ride from Jamie Kah, the filly proved far too good for her rivals. Run prior behind French Emotion was a beauty and obviously that form reads well, and looks to get over comfortably.
2 Light Romance (Bet Now: $10.00) could be an improver. Resumed in the William Thomas race here two weeks ago and I think just forget she went around. Back and wide throughout and couldn’t come on. Draws much better this time around and her form from last prep, gee it reads well for this. Happy to give her another look.
Race 5. (14:20) Heritage Finance Handicap (78) 1440m
3 Silvera (Bet Now: $5.75), ability wise, is the best horse in the race. Just depends where he is at fitness wise. Four year old that resumes for Tony McEvoy after a solid enough Spring prep where he won a couple of races before not quite measuring up with success during the Melbourne Carnival. Cranbourne trial earlier in April was very good and is a bomb when produced fresh.
8 Maximus (Bet Now: $3.60) will love getting back to a turning track. Just think the straight course didn’t suit him on Anzac Day and he was near the inside section, which wasn’t the spot to be. 1440m looks ideal for this bloke, draws well, hard fit, in form…he ticks plenty of boxes for mine and is a deserved threat.
Wouldn’t be surprised if 4 Wayanka (Bet Now: $26.00) ran well here. To the eye, he’s done nothing in three career outings to date, but his late splits each time havebn’t been too bad and this is probably the weakest race he has contested in some time. Finally draws a decent gate so hopefully Kersley can utilise that.
Race 6. (15:00) The Sheen Panel Service Handicap 1200m
2 Vainstream (Bet Now: $4.60) gets the nod. John Pascoe has a smart three year old on his hands here and he drops a bit in depth after contesting the VOBIS Gold Dash last time out here when a close up third to Sam’s Image, with Nature Strip coming second. Probably not the best form buit he does everything right, hard fit and fights.
1 Bel Sonic (Bet Now: $11.00) is a really smart three year old for Jason Warren and Aquis Farm. Won his first two runs in the Summer prep before going to the Magic Millions Guineas at the Gold Coast where he was outclassed behind Pierata. Couple of really solid jump outs at Mornington to prepare and he is a bomb when produced fresh.
The wet track certainly brings a horse like 9 Lakhoni (Bet Now: $23.00) into the mix. Led all the way to win on debut on a soft track and since then has performed quite well. Comes through the William Thomas race where he got back and couldn’t come on. Bred to swim, so a wet track certainly helps his cause.
Race 7. (15:40) Darren Gauci Handicap (84) 1100m
3 Wise Hero (Bet Now: $3.45) looks one of the better bets on the card for mine. Really talented four year old that resumes for the John Price team after a pretty fruitful Summer prep, where he won the one race and placed in three others from the four starts. Bomb fresh horse and trialled like that recently at Cranbourne. Think he’ll run well.
8 Inn Keeper (Bet Now: $4.25) has to be included. This bloke was outstanding during the Warrnambool Carnival and this horse really does like the hands of Linda Meech, with all five career wins coming when she has been aboard, like she is here. Tricky gate to overcome, but hard to knock the way she is going.
4 Another Coldie (Bet Now: $14.00) is a talented galloper that resumes for Darren Weir. His Spring/Summer was very good, winning a few races before ending it on Pakenham Cup Day behind Master Reset. Normally needs a run to find his best into a campaign, but he draws well here and maps ideally for mine.
Race 8. (16:20) Le Pine Funerals Handicap 2000m
2 Furrion (Bet Now: $1.67) looks the one. On trial for a Derby trip to Brisbane so I’ll be keen to see how he handles the step up to 2000m. Looked a moral during the Warrnambool Carnival and won accordingly under Brad Rawiller over 1700m, absolutely spanking them. Looks a Group l horse and I’d be surprised if he didn’t beat this.
I’m very wary of 3 Lucky For All (Bet Now: $8.00). Former kiwi who is 2/2 in Australia under Darren Weir, the latest coming during the Warrnambool Carnival where he looked the good thing across the three days and despite making his run on the worst part of the track, he still proved too good. Personally, I think he is 6-12 months away from showing his best, but the fact they are thinking the QLD Derby for him tells me they must have a huge opinion of this horse.
16 Von Mystic (Bet Now: $26.00) rises sharply in grade/depth but plenty to like about his maiden win over 1700m at Warrnambool during the Carnival. Lane produced an absolute peach on the gelding, poking his way through the field and attacking the line with real purpose. Off that run, 2000m should be no issue.
Race 9. (16:52) Catanach's Jewellers Handicap (84) 2000m
2 Mongolian Wolf (Bet Now: $7.00) looks ready to do something positive here. He comes through the 1700m race on Brierly Day at the Bool where he got back and closed off well behind stablemate Tradesman. He is a horse who thrives on wet ground, getting hard fit and the claim for Lachie King is a big tick.
13 Like The Clappers (Bet Now: $9.50) is a beauty for the Matty Williams yard. He ran over 1700m during the Warrnambool Carnival where he lumped 61kg and ran well, ran second in fact, behind a potential Group l horse in Furrion. Another that is suspect at ten furlongs, but gets weight relief and Daniel Moor steers.
8 Sunday Pray (Bet Now: $9.00) a definite threat. John Moloney has this bloke going really well and one thing we do know with him is that he’s a tough bugger to get past. That was the case over the mile here a fortnight back when bloused by My Paisann and the Lizard Island. 2000m a query, but leads for fun and rail out twelve metres, leaders should be advantaged.
