13/1/2018 Horse Racing Tips and Best Bets – Gold Coast, Magic Millions race day

Arguably the biggest raceday on the Queensland calendar is Magic Millions Day on the Gold Coast and it arrives this Saturday with a bumper nine race card, with near $9 Million in prizemoney up for grabs. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out a metre from the 1000m-400m; True for the remainder.

10 Dinnigan (Bet Now: $1.70) does look the obvious play. Aquis Farm filly for the Waterhouse/Bott team who had market support last time out in the Vo Rogue and she gave a really good kick but no match late for Pierta, but she stuck on for second. That’s the Magic Millions Guineas hot pot so surely that reads best for this.

11 Problem Solver (Bet Now: $8.50) is a nice looking daughter of Hinchinbrook first up for Gerald Ryan. This girl contested three maidens in the Winter to kick off the prep, each time finishing runner up, the latest behind proven city performer and recent Caulfield winner The Avenger. Been given a couple of solid trials to prepare so to my eye she looks ready.

3 Epic Rant (Bet Now: $21.00) might well be the value here. Former Waterhouse/Bott trained horse now with Michael Costa here at the Gold Coast. Did show talent when racing in Sydney but couldn’t quite measure up. Thought his trial at Murwillumbah behind some Group class Matty Dunn horses was very good. Draws a sweet gate, Shinn on…he’s the clear value.

2 Conca Del Sogno (Bet Now: $11.00) is a beauty at Rockhampton for Tim Cook. Really went to a new level in the Autumn/Winter, winning a stack of races on the bounce before being tipped out. Resumed over 1200m on his home track and was a bit unlucky not to win when second to the low flying Miss Anna, getting held up at a vital stage. Has to carry a fair bit of weight, but he is just a winner.

10 Trust Me (Bet Now: $10.00) is an above average son of Sepoy for the Brett Partelle team who was heavily backed last start at Gosford and despite wobbling around the turn, he was far too good for his rivals and won quite impressively in good time. Bit suspect at a hard 1200m, but hard to ignore what he did last time.

13 Not Surprising (Bet Now: $31.00) is a talented mare that resumes for Kris Lees and I reckon she could be the knockout chance. Had raced really well during the Winter before being tipped out and this does look a clear target race. Couple of quiet trials to get her ready, she is a noted first up performer and fresh at 1200m, when all her form is at 1000m-1100m tells me she’s ready to go.

13 Realing (Bet Now: $11.00) on top in a very tough race. This son of Real Saga hasn’t raced for five weeks since scoring a sharp win over the Doomben mile, aided by an absolute peach from Tye Angland, who somehow got near the rail from the wide gate and the splits came at the right time. Fast run 1300m looks ideal and he’ll be strong late.

3 Havasay (Bet Now: $4.40) has come back in great order. Enormous run in defeat fresh behind Pinch River before going to the Falvelon where he lost a bit of momentum on the turn but he was very good late behind Snitzkraft. The pace in front of him here will be a cracker, so he will get his chance to launch late. Definite threat.

10 Bourbon Road (Bet Now: $26.00) has been one of the more improved gallopers in Queensland racing the last 12-18 months. Once upon a time he was struggling to win at Toowoomba and now he’s a chance in a $1 Million race. Hasn’t raced since December 13 when scoring a narrow but impressive win over 1400m after being heavily backed. Saves his best for this track.

If 4 Sedanzer (Bet Now: $2.40) runs the trip, I think she wins. This mare had absolutely no friends in betting last time out in the Belle Of The Turf at Gosford yet still rattled home from the back to run second to the in form Joe Pride mare Pecans. Two previous runs beyond 2000m have been just plain but she is a much different/better horse now.

7 Feltre (Bet Now: $8.00) has run really well in this race the past couple of years and he looks to be ticking over beautifully to something similar in 2018. Bolted up over the 1800m here two back before racing at the same track/distance last Saturday and just felt the pinch late with the big weight behind the heavily backed Aqua Vite. Saves his best for 2000m+ and gets weight relief.

One horse that will keep chipping away is 11 All Too Huiyung (Bet Now: $11.00). He probably has to improve a bit on recent form here over the 1800m but I like him on the back up. Tried hard here last Saturday but he couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Mishani Bullitt. Given how tough he is, the 2200m, I don’t think, will be an issue, and he does get right down in the weights.

1 Global Glamour (Bet Now: $3.00) is a high quality mare that resumes for the Waterhouse/Bott team. Was very unlucky not to win the Guineas last year and fast forward 12 months, she’s an even better horse. Had a two run Spring prep, winning the Tristarc first up before an inglorious effort in the Myer behind Shoals. Has been set for this race and is wound up off the back of two very sharp trials.

12 Pepperano (Bet Now: $16.00) is a quality mare for the Liam Birchley team who ran in this race last year and finished midfield behind Madotti. Two runs back have been super. Resumed with a second to Care To Think at Doomben before racing in the Nudgee and finishing a narrow third to Don’tbabylon. Step up in trip looks ideal, has upside and has class.

14 Denpurr (Bet Now: $27.00) is a daughter of Denman who looks a great chance at odds. She had the one soft trial prior to resuming in the Christmas Classic at Randwick where she got back but worked home with real purpose late when a close up fifth to Music Magnate, beaten just under two lengths. Not the greatest of second up records, but hard to ignore the resumption.

I believe 11 Care To Think (Bet Now: $3.40) will be a Group l class horse in time and I think at his first run on the big stage, he can live up to the expectation. His two wins this time in really have been that of a star. Defied the mad bias to win first up with arrogance and then did something similar in the Buffering when overcome severe traffic to win with ease. He’ll eat up the 1400m on the big track, has upside, brilliance, turn of foot…he’s a star.

3 Crack Me Up (Bet Now: $7.00) does look the obvious. His win in the Villiers was unbelievable. Yes it was set up by Cabeza De Vaca, but he still had to wear down the margin and his turn of foot late was outstanding. He’s a high class animal who will be a Group l horse with time and I am confident he can go close here.

8 Ozi Choice (Bet Now: $11.00) has been quite a remarkable story for Darren Weir. For most of 2017, this horse was just going through the motions and not really putting in, but it seems that the trip away to Morphettville three back and that ride from Huxtable has really switched him on. Went to to win at Caulfield and then led all the way at Sandown. Takes on some high class types here, but you can never rule out a Weir runner with a picket fence next to the name.

You would think only bad luck or Sasso Corbaro beats 1 Pierata (Bet Now: $2.50). The Gre Hickman trained three year old has dominated the Summer Carnival so far and really should be 3/3 this prep had it not been for bias two back in the Gold Edition, but he made amends when spanking them in the Vo Rogue. He has everything in QLD covered. Just all depends from Sydney…Newcastle specifically.

15 Sasso Corbaro (Bet Now: $4.60) is the key threat and perhaps only threat. She has won like a star in both runs this time, and each start she has smashed the clock. Loved the way she let down a fortnight back at Randwick. Admittedly, beat nothing, but the clock was there to tell you she went super, and 1400m is no issue.

11 Calculated (Bet Now: $15.00) is a very promising horse for Chris Waller, and was touted by both he and Hugh Bowman as a horse who could develop into a Cox Plate contender. They are big wraps. Hasn’t lived up to them yet but he may get conditions to suit here. His run on Boxing Day at Randwick behind Intuition was full of merit given he was wide most of the way and was pulling his head off. Fast run 1400m will suit and the trip away may sharpen him up.

Just have to side with 2 Ef Troop (Bet Now: $4.60). He has been the best 2YO I’ve seen so far this season and the great thing he has is sustained, something we have seen win this race numerous times, including last year with Houtzen. Phelan Ready win was outstanding, and while he beat nothing, he smashed the clock. Has the pace to take care of the wide draw.

I’m just taken with the way 11 Sunlight (Bet Now: $3.90) is going about her business in Queensland. Gave them an absolute caning over 900m here first up before racing over 1100m here last Saturday where she was expected to win. What we got was a simply breathtaking performance, and I would say it was better than the effort of Houtzen in the race last year before she went on to win the Magic Millions. Think this girl can repeat the dose.

Best chance at double figures to my eye is 7 Bondi (Bet Now: $21.00). Team Snowden trains this colt, who hasn’t raced since resuming in the Wyong Magic Millions where he looked to carry a fair bit of condition and he just peaked on the run late behind Jonker. Of all the runners here, he has the most upside and is of course in the right stable when it comes to a Grand Final.

3 Viddora (Bet Now: $2.60) does look the standout. High class mare for Lloyd Kennewell who has been one of the more improved gallopers in Australia over the last 12 months or so, culminating in a last start win in the Winterbottom and she was arrogant. It was a Group l, but a pretty poor field. Still, won like a good thing. I think she is a good thing here.

9 Egyptian Symbol (Bet Now: $4.80) is a high class mare for Bjorn Baker who has been set for this for some time. Resumed with a devastating win in the Starlight, smashing the clock and doing it with a bit in reserve. Two trials since have been outstanding, she draws the right part of the track and that turn of foot is lethal.

14 Snitzkraft (Bet Now: $11.00) resumed in the Falvelon despite no public trials so the fitness levels were unknown but the punters knew because they crunched it late in betting and the plunge was home, leading all the way under Larry Cassidy. Clearly more depth here, and won’t get it as easy, but hard to ignore that resumption.

NEXT BEST: Race Four Number 4 Sedanzer

VALUE: Race Three Number 13 Realing
