The Golden Slipper Carnival kicks off at Rosehill this Saturday with a bumper nine race card, headlined by the Group l Coolmore Classic (1500m). The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Coolmore Classic 🏆: View the Field for the Coolmore Classic
Race 1. (12:45) Iron Jack (bm78) 1900m
Going the way of 12 Monegal (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) in the opener. Theresa Bateup trains this mare, who ran over 2000m at Randwick last start and didn’t mind the way she closed her race off behind Think It Over after ducking and weaving in the straight. She’s a mare who loves to get her toe in and with the claim, she gets in very well at the weights.
14 Welsh Legend (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) has only won the one race but she’s been pretty decent this prep without winning. Ran over 1800m on the Kenso track last time out where she tried quite hard but was clearly no match for the in form Mugatoo, who would be $1.10 against these. Well held by that horse but beat the rest comfortably and fourth up, she’s hard fit now.
11 Domed (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS) can be an improver here. Thought her run two back behind Matowi over the mile was quite good before stepping up to 2000m at Randwick a fortnight ago where she tried hard but was wide throughout out the back and couldn’t come on. 1900m is her pet distance and she should just about be ready re fitness.
Race 2. (13:25) Pago Pago Stakes 1200m
In the corner of 1 Aim (Bet Now: $4.00 TOP ODDS) for Team Snowden. Tried to qualify for the Slipper via a win in the Skyline a fortnight ago and if you were on, it was a really ugly watch. Got badly held up behind runners before eventually getting clear late and finishing off hard to run third. Stable won this race last year with Cosmic Force and this bloke needs to win to ensure he gets a start.
3 Ilovemyself (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) is a huge watch here. He didn’t smash the clock when winning on debut down the Flemington straight two weeks ago, but the turn of foot when clear was there for all to see and he looked very impressive in winning under light riding from Olly. Good test here, but all the noise around this bloke is positive from both trainer and Olly.
I’ll take a chance with the Gerald Ryan colt 7 Kumasi (Bet Now: $5.00 TOP ODDS). He might have only won a Gosford midweek 2YO maiden over 1000m, but the runner up looks smart, they gapped the rest, and they smashed the clock relative to the day, a really good sign for the juveniles, especially at start one. Off that, 1200m will be fine and being by Snitzel, a wet track should be fine if we get it.
Race 3. (14:00) Magic Night Stakes 1200m
1 Stellar Pauline (Bet Now: $2.80 TOP ODDS) looks the safe option. Thought she would have been a perfect candidate for the Percy Sykes with a freshen up after the Sweet Embrace where she went too keen in front and was nabbed late by Hungry Heart, a filly who I think will measure up in the Slipper. That form, I think, can be trusted here, and Stellar Pauline is a much better horse with cover.
5 Dubai Star (Bet Now: $8.50 TOP ODDS) is trying to get her way into the Slipper via back to back wins this prep. Resumed under the lights at Canterbury and while it was nothing flash to the eye and on the clock, she did knuckle down when asked and drew clear late to win. This stable should always be respected when it comes to the Golden Slipper and she’s got the right racing pattern.
10 Jemss (Bet Now: $51.00 TOP ODDS) does look to be a filly that will be better as a 3YO. Resumes for David Payne and interesting she resumes in a strong race like this. Had two runs in the Summer, debuting over 1200m with a solid fourth to Aim before coming back to 1100m and had excuses behind Vangelic. Recent trial was good and 1200m fresh at this level tells me enough work has been put in to run a positive race.
Race 4. (14:35) Maurice Mccarten Stakes 1100m
3 Star Of The Seas (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) for me. Classy gelding for Chris Waller that resumes, having not raced since contesting The Gong at Kembla where he ran a very good third to stablemate Mister Sea Wolf, who of course came out and placed at Group l level last Saturday. Trials leading in have been great, parks off a good speed, loves wet ground and goes well fresh.
2 Greyworm (Bet Now: $3.30 TOP ODDS) is an absolute beauty for Team Hawkes who is three weeks between runs since resuming over 1100m at Rosehill and really, the race was over after 100m. JVO showed really good initiative to lead and once he found the front, he controlled things and was just far too good. He’s better with a bunny to chase and should prove really hard to beat.
If they overdo it in front, 7 Diplomatico (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) will be one closing hard at the end. Team Hawkes trains this talented four year old, who resumes. He hasn’t really gone on with it since his 3YO days where he promised to be a high class animal. Fast run 1100m should suit him first up. He’ll give them a start but be charging late.
Race 5. (15:10) Phar Lap Stakes 1500m
Have to be with 6 Funstar (Bet Now: $1.85). Think you could easily make a case that if she drew an inside barrier, she would have won the Surround first up. Just had to drag back from the wide gate, forced wide on the turn and make a sustained run. Was only bloused near the peg by Probabeel. They look the standouts. Just think there’s more upside with Funstar.
5 Probabeel… (Bet Now: $2.35) how did she win the Surround? She hit a flat spot on the turn and looked to be struggling while Funstar got the hop on her. She managed to pick herself up and really surge hard the final few strides to get up and beat Funstar in a thrilling finish. While she had the two runs in NZ prior, she was carrying condition and will improve as well.
There is a tail to this race outside the top two. Think 1 Kubrick (Bet Now: $12.00) can be an improver. Resumed three weeks ago in the Hobartville in what was a real on pace dominated affair, a race shape which isn’t his go at all so forget he went around behind Brandenberg. Better suited here. Just bumps into a couple of star fillies but he’ll run an improved race.
Race 6. (15:45) Ajax Stakes 1500m
Have to give 5 Imaging (Bet Now: $7.50) another chance. Was really on him first up in the Liverpool Cup and seemed to get into a beaut spot just off the speed, ready to pounce. But Bossy on Cascadian had other ideas and the pair got into a real heavy bumping battle. Imaging was found to be 2/5 lame post race, so clear excuses. Track should have give in it, and can’t sack him off one run with genuine excuses.
He has the runs on the board re class does 1 Olmedo (Bet Now: $14.00), and he has a soft gate to use. His form from France isn’t world class, but it’s high class. Kacy Fogden has the training duties of this import and while I doubt he has the class/quality to win a Doncaster/Queen Elizabeth, his form is clearly good enough to win this. He seems a horse that has a short burst of speed then whacks away so hopefully the gate is used to advantage.
Keen to see 10 I Am Superman (Bet Now: $9.50) up to 1500m. Team Snowden trains this import, who had been trialling up quite well prior to resuming two weeks ago in the Liverpool Cup and worked home well against the race shape when fourth to Quackerjack. Like him up in trip with the run under the belt and does have a touch of class.
Race 7. (16:25) Coolmore Classic 1500m
Going each way in the shape of 11 Spanish Whisper (Bet Now: $12.00). This mare had trialled up really well prior to resuming over 1400m at Flemington two weeks ago where she lumped 58.5kg and was held up for a few strides before eventually getting clear and finding the line well. Gets a good weight pull on Sylvia’s Mother here, has more upside and love the booking of Tom Marquand.
5 Pohutukawa… (Bet Now: $4.20) gee she’s a nightmare to follow and trust. Was a real eye catcher first up behind Sweet Deal in the Triscay before going to the Guy Walter where she hit a flat spot early on in the straight before picking up and savaging the line late to just miss out on picking up Dawn Dawn. Third up at 1500m, she’s a leading contender.
I’m keen on 9 Noire (Bet Now: $15.00) running well here. She looks to have come back in really good order for Chris Waller. Like most, she comes through the Guy Walter from two weeks ago and I think most would agree that she goes close to winning with clear air. That followed a strong resumption from the back behind Sweet Deal in the Triscay. Bursting to win a big one and she gets a great chance here I feel.
Race 8. (17:05) Sky High Stakes 2000m
Just how good is 10 Master Of Wine? (Bet Now: $2.25) His win first up three weeks ago over 1400m was just unbelievable. He is a stayer that looks a Melbourne Cup prospect yet he showed an electric turn of foot and put them away without really being fully extended by Tommy Berry. Didn’t beat much, but it was the arrogance in which he put them away that was impressive.
There was so much class and arrogance about the first up win of 9 Mustajeer (Bet Now: $3.50) in the Parramatta Cup. The race was pretty much over after 300m when Bowman was able to tuck in midfield one off and the horse was absolutely bolting. Just a matter of pushing the button. Has to be respected here off that win with upside to come and weight relief.
Getting away from WFA and stepping up to 2000m should suit 11 Carif (Bet Now: $23.00). No surprise that he was a near rank outsider when resuming in the Chipping Norton and while he only beat one runner home, his run had merit to it given the set up was clearly not ideal. More suited here. May want further, but form from the Spring does read well.
Race 9. (17:45) Cerrone (bm88) 1350m
7 Accession (Bet Now: $5.00) is a Chris Waller trained three year old who was okay when resuming in the Inglis Sprint behind Rubisaki before going to 1200m at Randwick a fortnight ago in the sit/sprint won by Trumbull so want to be forgiving of that. His best is clearly good enough to beat these. Been a while since he has showed it but back to Rosehill I think is a big tick.
8 Royal Celebration (Bet Now: $5.50) is close to running out of chances you’d have to think. Gets one more look here. On face value, had every chance two weeks ago at Randwick behind Trumbull but that race was a real sit/sprint affair and it just didn’t suit him at all. Was 1300m back to 1200m that day. Now back up to 1350m looks ideal.
5 House Of Cartier (Bet Now: $16.00) was the flashing light run in the Trumbull race from two weeks ago. She was off a freshen up and looked to have plenty to offer, getting badly held up in the straight and clearly should have finished closer. I think she’ll want further than 1350m, so while I think she’s a threat here, goes in all multiples, I’d be waiting til next start to back her.
