Saturday racing in Sydney returns to Randwick this weekend, with a crack bunch of top class horses set to run in the feature, the $250,000 Group ll Apollo Stakes (1400m), highlighted by classy mare and Cox Plate placegetter Silent Achiever. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.

Race One (1:05pm) : Dodo Handicap (80) 1200m: Form Guide
Back Me: Darciwood (Best Odds: $5.50) hasn’t been seen since running third to Coolring at Canterbury in December, seemingly having every chance. That form has clearly been franked thanks to that horse and Snippets Land winning, plus Darciwood looked pretty good in a recent trial win at Rosehill, sitting behind the leader and pouncing late. He is an enigma, but when he brings his best, he is a serious talent.
Big Danger: Selectify (Best Odds: $5.50) really put it all together last time in, winning three from three including two in town. Recent trial at Newcastle was very sharp behind a Stakes performer and the stable is just low flying at present, winning races right across Eastern Australia. Strikes a good field here, but he has a stack of upside.
Roughie: Field Marshall’s (Best Odds: $7.50) first up run behind Coolring here was more than satisfactory given he was attempting to make ground on the inside, which wasn’t the place to be, but he did stick on well. He has an excellent second up record, and a very good record at Randwick.

Race Two (1:45pm) : Huawei Handicap (85) 2400m: Form Guide
Back Me: In a very ordinary staying race, I’ll give Ghost Protocol (Best Odds: $7.00) another go. He was very good last Saturday at Rosehill when fourth to Centre Pivot given he got badly held up from the top of the straight to about the 200m mark before getting clear and working home strongly. He runs well at Randwick and strikes a very winnable race, plus he meets Koroibete 2kg better off for a short margin.
Big Danger: Last Wish (Best Odds: $6.00) was given a sweet ride by Sam Clipperton to beat the more fancied It’s A Silvertrail at Rosehill over 2000m about a month back. Up to 2400m looks perfect, on the limit and has fresh legs.
Roughie: The drop back to benchmark company should really suit Blazing Dragon (Best Odds: $6.00), who hasn’t been too bad at her last two outings, both at Stakes grade in the Gosford Cup and Australia Day Cup. She finds a very winnable race and Tommy Berry, who has had good success on her this prep, takes back the ride.

Race Three (2:20pm) : DX Solutions Lonhro Plate 1100m: Form Guide
Back Me: Furnaces (Best Odds: $2.10) is near the top of the betting for the Golden Slipper after a brilliant debut win at Rosehill on Cox Plate Day. He was immediately spelled and was made a blackbooker from the Rosehill trials on February 3 after a dominant all the way win. He looks one of the top youngsters for Godolphin and should take a power of beating here.
Big Danger: Wolf Cry (Best Odds: $16.00) made his race debut in the Breeders Plate and worked home very well when third to the now Golden Slipper favourite Vancouver. That form has obviously been franked. Wolf Cry has had two barrier trials to prepare for his return to racing, the latest of which coming at Randwick when winning under a good hold from Hugh Bowman. Looks to have improved significantly since the Spring and is a definite threat.
Roughie: Sebring Sun (Best Odds: $26.00) is unbeaten at the barrier trials, but just can’t quite crack it to win on race day. He should have won on debut back in the Spring when second to Pierrette, then ran here again and was just ok when third to Haptic. He has since gone back to the trials and won again on Monday at Warwick Farm, beating home Paceman. If he brings his trial form to race day, he can win.

Race Four (2:55pm) : Adaptra Southern Cross Stakes 1200m: Form Guide
Back Me: Best bet on the program, and maybe the best bet in Australia this weekend here thanks to Driefontein (Best Odds: $3.20), who was enormous in the Expressway last time out, copping serious pressure on speed before kicking clear 250m out, looking home before being nabbed right on the peg by Weary, who goes around as a leading contender in the Apollo. Looks to get a very soft lead here, Shinn sticks and is rock hard fit.
Big Danger: Territory (Best Odds: $4.40) went enormous in the Expressway also, making up nice ground late for third, beaten just over a length by Weary. That was his first go at WFA, so a big pass mark IMO, and now getting back to handicap level and gets a 4.5kg weight swing on the top tip. Only problem is the speed and whether or not it’ll be strong enough for him to run on successfully.
Roughie: Heart Testa (Best Odds: $15.00) caught the eye at massive odds two back in the Canterbury Classic after a month break, then went to the Carrington Stakes and didn’t have the best of luck when sixth to Ninth Legion, beaten six lengths. His record at Randwick is poor, but due to no leader apart from the top tip, he could roll forward here, sit on speed and run a cheeky race at odds.

Race Five (3:35pm) : Liberty International Underwriters Light Fingers Stakes 1200m: Form Guide
Back Me: Going to put Memorial (Best Odds: $10.00) on top. She was a very good two year old who had two runs as a three year old during the Spring and couldn’t quite match her deeds as a juvenile, and she was spelled after an ordinary last placing in the Furious to Winx. She has been given plenty of time, and looks in superb order based on two barrier trials, running second and first respectively. She didn’t have the hard Spring like most of these, and has had more time off with the fresh legs, so I’ll go with her.
Big Danger: First Seal (Best Odds: $3.20) is potentially the best three year old filly in Australia. She had an awesome Spring, highlighted by her dominant Flight Stakes triumph. She backed up seven days later in the Spring Champion and didn’t quite run the 2000m out when a brave second to Hampton Court. Recent trial behind Atmospherical was excellent and is the clear class runner.
Roughie: Supara (Best Odds: $81.00) resumes here for Gai after a pretty good opening campaign in the Spring, which saw a strong win at Canterbury before a narrow second against the older mares on a heavy track at Warwick Farm. Recent trial win here was very sharp, and she looks to have really filled out during the spell. Very keen to see how she measures up.

Race Six (4:15pm) : Optus Apollo Stakes 1400m: Form Guide
Back Me: Putting Contributor (Best Odds: $5.50) on top. The former European kicked off his Australian career with a dominant win on Caulfield Cup Day before running midfield in the Emirates. The stable have big plans for him this Autumn, and judging by his dominant trial win recently, those lofty ambitions are reachable. He is an absolute bomb when produced fresh, and definitely appears forward enough.
Big Danger: Weary (Best Odds: $6.00) was given a peach ride by new father Tommy Berry to win a thrilling edition of the Expressway Stakes, hugging the inside and diving through to grab Driefontein right on the peg. There should be good improvement off that, and he does have a touch of a fitness edge on his rivals.
Roughie: Silent Achiever (Best Odds: $13.00) is kicking off 2015 with ambitions to run in the Arc, and it’s hard to argue that she won’t be competitive there after her outstanding third in the Cox Plate last year. Has spelled back home in New Zealand and has trialled and galloped very sharply. Can run well fresh, but I am tipping her to run a ripper here

Race Seven (4:55pm) : Robrick Lodge Triscay Stakes 1200m: Form Guide
Back Me: She hasn’t been seen since winning the Tatt’s Tiara, and she has give some decent weight to her rivals, but gee I am keen on Cosmic Endeavour (Best Odds: $2.60) who was made a blackbooker from the recent Randwick trials, where she looked very impressive, sitting on speed before being asked for an effort by Tommy Berry and the Group l winner sprinted brilliantly. Just looks far too classy for this lot, and she is definitely wound up enough to win.
Big Danger: Calming Influence (Best Odds: $7.00) has performed very well in three runs in Melbourne but Chris Waller has sent the mare back to Sydney, and the trip has done her the world of good on face value. She sat behind the speedy Net Worth and Agadir at the trials before peeling wide under the guidance of Hugh Bowman and she closed off really well under no pressure. Draws terribly, but should roll forward and perhaps get the drag over from Champagne Cath.
Roughie: Mahara (Best Odds: $8.50) is a last start Stakes winner on Cup Day who has come back in great order based on her trial here when third to tearaway winner and noted trial speedster Kencella, beaten 14 lengths, but this mare made up significant ground over the final 150m under no real pressure from Blake Shinn and was very powerful through the line. Not sure if this is her race, but I am sure there is another Stakes race in her this prep, maybe even a Group l.

Race Eight (5:35pm) : Crown Castle Handicap (85) 1400m: Form Guide
Back Me: Snippets Land (Best Odds: $5.50) clearly on top for me. He has been kept fresh by Team Snowden, with some decent space between runs. He ran second to Coolring at Canterbury, then was freshened up and sent to the provincials for the easy kill…and to say it was easy wouldn’t do it justice because he just absolutely spanked them. Gets in on the limit here and meets Coolring so much better at the weights, plus has a stack more upside.
Big Danger: Countryman (Best Odds: $4.40) was a tragedy beaten two weeks back at Rosehill when third to Coolring. He got badly held up in a slowly run race and wasn’t allowed to build up momentum. I made him a blackbooker from the meeting and the only thing that stops him being on top is the weight he has to carry compared to Snippets Land.
Roughie: Black Revolver (Best Odds: $13.00) trialled pretty well prior to his first up run at Rosehill when fourth to Oxford Poet, working home well on the rail, which wasn’t the place to be that afternoon. He has some pretty good form at Randwick and is a horse with the fresh legs and upside left. The knockout chance.
