One of the richest racedays on the Australian calendar is Magic Millions Day and the 2021 edition rolls around at the Gold Coast this Saturday with a bumper nine race meeting. The weather is fine, the track is soft (5) and the rail is out a metre from the 1000m-400m; True for the remainder.

Race 1. (13:15) MAGIC MILLIONS MAIDEN PLATE 1200m
This race is always a tricky one to sort out with confidence. I’m going towards those that will be near the speed that is drawn well and on top is 2 Dominarcher (Bet Now: $27.00), resuming for Billy Healey. Son of Golden Archer that resumes, having not raced since his debut back in August when leading and fighting on well, but clearly no match for Shooting For Gold in running second. Loved the trial win here last week and good lead that Bossy, who rode in the trial, sticks.
8 For Valour (Bet Now: $5.00) will put himself near the speed and give his all. Resumed over 1250m at Canterbury off the back of impressive trials, sitting on speed and fighting on strongly when second to impressive winner Major Artie. Gets Nash to steer and from the gate, dare say he’ll lead and prove hard to run down.
I’m very interested in 14 Defiant Diva (Bet Now: $26.00). Team Corstens trained filly that has been kept on ice since her debut at Yarra Valley back on December 18 and though seemingly a well held second, watching the replay, I think with a clear run early on, she fights the finish out. Drawn terribly, but gets Craig Williams and should be strong late.
Race 2. (13:50) MAGIC MILLIONS OPEN Handicap 1800m
I’m buttering up with 5 Frosty Rocks (Bet Now: $3.80). On the quick back up for Bjorn Baker after racing in the TAB Wave last Saturday. Nash gave him a 12/10 from the front and looked the winner when the button was pushed. Just couldn’t quite fend off Paradee and had to settle for second. Looks to lead these for fun and is very well weighted.
Now she has a win on the board, think 3 Paradee (Bet Now: $2.80) can go on with it but the draw makes it a tough ask. Danny O’Brien trained mare that had been racing so well without winning but that changed last Saturday here when taking out the TAB Wave under a lovely ride from Craig Williams, who stalked the speed and finished best. Hard to beat against these.
6 Agassi (Bet Now: $27.00) is in winning form and I think commands respect. Was formerly with Anthony Cummings before having a few runs for Diane Murphy, the latest of those seeing the gelding win impressively at Doomben. He is now under the care of Sonja Kumpikas and overall, this isn’t a strong race.
Race 3. (14:25) MAGIC MILLIONS SUBZERO 2400m
5 Elaborate (Bet Now: $6.50) has been set for this race for some time and I reckon is ticking along beautifully for it. He ran in the Shoot Out two weeks ago at Eagle Farm and I thought was given a peach by Ben Thompson. Was there to win but just couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Barade. Hard fit now at 2400m, he’s likeable.
3 Primitivo (Bet Now: $6.00) is another that is coming along nicely for this race. Race shape was somewhat against him last time out in the Summer Cup but he was okay late behind Spirit Ridge, who won last Saturday to frank the form. Gets to 2400m and keep in mind he bolted up in this race last year.
6 Skiddaw (Bet Now: $5.50) is racing very well at the moment for Danny O’Brien and is a leading contender here. Impressive winner over the mile two back on Ballarat Cup Day before racing at the same trip at Flemington in a fast run race, just failing to get there when third to Long Arm. Like him up in trip, draws well and have to respect the stable.
Race 4. (15:00) MAGIC MILLIONS SNIPPETS 1200m
More than happy to back 14 Poetic Charmer (Bet Now: $34.00) each way for Team Snowden. He has come back in super order but has just been plagued by bad gates in both runs this time in. He will love getting onto a firmer track and sitting off a very brutal speed, can see him finishing off very strongly late.
Tony Gollan looks to have figured out the key to 7 Jonker (Bet Now: $4.80) and that is to keep him on the fresh side so he can remain explosive. Broke the track record when winning the Keith Noud fresh at Doomben before a close up second to Hard Empire in the George Moore. Been freshened up and scorched the turf in a trial win here. He’ll look the winner for a fair way.
3 Roheryn (Bet Now: $7.00) has the engine under the hood to give this a shake. Just a matter of where he gets to in the run. Earned his way into this race via a win three weeks ago in the Falvelon where he attacked the line from off the pace to get up and win. He is a dynamic fresh horse so three weeks between runs I like. Just can’t concede too much head start.
Race 5. (15:35) MAGIC MILLIONS FILLIES & MARES 1300m
Been hot on 9 Snapdancer (Bet Now: $3.50) for some time for this race day and won’t be dropping off. She has smashed the clock in both runs back from a spell, each time winning and savaging the line like a really good horse. Reckon she could be a sneaky chance for a race like the Sangster in Adelaide provided she wins this, which I think she will.
1300m should prove to be no issues for the James Cummings trained 2 Athiri (Bet Now: $2.80). She earned her way into this race via a dominant win in the Nudgee Stakes at Eagle Farm two weeks ago. Nash gave her a perfect run just behind the speed and once the splits came, her class came to the fore. Generally this race is won by the best mare in the race, and on exposed form, she is just about the best mare in the field.
Clarry Conners has done a fab job with 11 Stolen Jade (Bet Now: $7.00). Since being trained as a sprinter, she has just become a different horse and a winning machine. Made it four on the bounce when an impressive winner here last Saturday, getting a suck run behind the speed before Brad Stewart got a narrow split nearer the inside and the mare did the rest. She’s flying and deserves a crack.
Race 6. (16:15) MAGIC MILLIONS 2YO CLASSIC 1200m
It was a real statement made by 12 Swift Witness (Bet Now: $3.70) in winning the Pearl here on Saturday. She didn’t just win. She spanked them and did it with something in the tank as well. Visually, she was sharp, and the clock agreed, running around 5.5L faster time than the boys in the Nugget. She’s in the right stable and has the proven formula to follow.
If you like Swift Witness, like I do, then you do have to respect 11 She’s All Class (Bet Now: $4.20). She was arrogant in winning the Wyong 2YO Magic Millions. She gapped them with such ease and did beat Swift Witness quite comfortably. Tick over trial was good, form has been franked…the knock is can Chris Waller train a big race 2YO winner?
If a horse deserves a win, it is 6 Baby Wong (Bet Now: $15.00) for Stephen Jones. Three weeks between runs since nearly getting a Stakes win next to his name via the Bruce McLachlan but had to settle for a close up second to Alpine Edge. Liked the tick over trial and don’t see 1200m being an issue for him.
Race 7. (17:00) MAGIC MILLIONS 3YO GUINEAS 1400m
12 Forbidden Love (Bet Now: $5.50) has the runs on the board to prove the one to beat here and am a bit surprised she isn’t nearly favourite. She was close up in the Group l Empire Rose before being freshened up with this race in mind. Went to the Gosford Guineas where she was heavily backed and despite not really handling the tight track, class got her home. Malkovich has ticked that form off and this girl should love the bigger track and a fast run 1400m.
It was simply stunning from 13 Isotope (Bet Now: $2.35) and what she was able to produce to win the Gold Edition. And she had to produce it because Away Game pinched a break and looked all over a winner, but this girl, with race fitness, really savaged the line late to get up and win. The query is 1400m, but off what she has done her past two, it should be fine.
15 Gotta Kiss (Bet Now: $14.00) has been prepped up specifically to run a strong 1400m here. Comes through the Vo Rogue from two weeks ago and though she got back in the run, thought she had her chance to win when second to Apache Chase. Can sit closer in the run and be dangerous at odds.
Race 8. (17:45) Magic Millions Cup
I’ve been a real knocker of 12 Yao Dash (Bet Now: $3.00) this time in because he had been disappointing from a betting perspective. But he looks back to his best now based on what he produced here last Saturday. Had to run well to warrant backing up here and he did more than run well. He gave his rivals a real galloping lesson and it reminded me of the Yao Dash of 18 months, which saw him far from disgraced in a Group l Golden Rose. I’m trusting he’ll hold that form here and if so, think he wins.
3 Eleven Eleven (Bet Now: $5.50) is an absolute beauty and Greg Hickman has him humming along superbly. Bounced back to his best with a win in the Wyong 3&4YO Magic Millions before producing an electric finale from the back to win the Christmas Classic at Canterbury. Just can’t ignore the way he is going and the form around him.
This looks a real target race for 5 Scallopini (Bet Now: $20.00). The O’Dea/Hoysted looked to have planned for this with a month between runs before contesting the Buffering where he got back and worked home strongly in an eye catching effort behind Soxagon. Is a winner at the track and has more upside than most.
Race 9. (18:20) MAGIC MILLIONS QTIS OPEN HANDICAP 1300m
Bossy will need to produce a 12/10 aboard 10 Yamazaki (Bet Now: $5.00) but if he can, this mare has a lethal finale on her, especially on dry ground. She was good from the back a few weeks ago at Randwick behind Big Parade, her first run since October. Tick over trial was good…she’ll need luck, but has that finish to win.
6 Boomtown Lass (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Chris Anderson trained mare that finished midfield in this race last year but looks to be racing much better this time around in readiness for it. Sat near the speed in the Nudgee two weeks ago at Eagle Farm and she battled away well, getting another blacktype placing to her name when second to Athiri. That’s good form for this.
8 Tokoriki Lad (Bet Now: $16.00) is a proven performer on this race day, having ran a narrow second to Chapter And Verse in this race two years ago. Finished down the track in the race last year and this year brings fresh legs and comes back from a run over the mile. That run was at Doomben when wide no cover for the trip in a total forgive. His best is good enough to sneak a first four spot.
