A bumper ten race card has been assembled for the Gold Coast this Saturday where it is Goldmarket Day. The weather forecast is for showers, the track is heavy (9) and the rail is out half a metre from the 1000m-400m; True for the remainder.
Race 1. (12:35) Hollindale Stakes Day May 4 Plate (Class 3) 1800m
4 See The Master (Bet Now: $3.40) looks the winner. Seems to be enjoying getting some sun on his back after spanking his rivals at this track/distance at the midweeks, sitting off the speed before Fradd pounced and put them away impressively. Bit more depth this time around, but now he’s got the win on the board, and a good one at that, I’m hoping he can go on with it.
10 Drumadoir (Bet Now: $3.00) is a little query at 1800m but I think she’s the best horse in the race. Ran over the mile at Doomben two weeks ago where I think the tempo beat her. Just had to concede too much ground in a slowly run race and she surged but just missed on picking up Reiby The Red. If it’s a sit sprint, I think that will suit her because she’s got the best turn of foot.
13 Sornja…(Bet Now: $9.00) she’s a very frustrating conveyance because she’s got the talent to beat these. The endeavour is her downfall. Ran over the mile at Doomben last Wednesday where she surged and looked home but couldn’t finish it off when beaten narrowly by Fort Myer. Has a really good record at the Gold Coast 1800m, so perhaps up in trip will help her cause.
Race 2. (13:12) Moco Meats Rump Steaks Handicap (85) 2400m
8 Wu Gok (Bet Now: $3.60) comes through the Kubis race at Eagle Farm from last Saturday and I thought his run was full of merit, getting well back, forced wide on the turn and was never really a winning factor but did make up good ground late to run third. He’s starting to find his best form now and 2400m on the home track should be no issue. Clearly hard to beat.
7 Fighting Teo (Bet Now: $5.50) is a handy enough stayer for the Kevin Kemp stable. Beaten as a short price fav two back at the Gold Coast before being well backed last time out at Eagle Farm where for mine he had his chance when fourth to Perfect Witness. Got the ability to win this for sure…just depends on if he’s going as well as what he has in the past. But does like racing here.
5 Perilous Love (Bet Now: $61.00) won’t start $60+ I can guarantee that. Thought she’d run a race last time at Doomben but unfortunately not enough rain dropped and she couldn’t really get into the race. Heavy 9/worse on the cards here for her, on her home track, and with only 52kg on her back, got to have something small on her each way because of her wet track credentials.
Race 3. (13:48) McCain Foods Handicap (0MW) 900m
These 900m scampers are always fraught with danger but the safe option is 2 Bonsho (Bet Now: $2.35) for Tony Sears. Resumed over 1000m at Eagle Farm three weeks ago when attempting to lead all the way and giving a really good good kick but just found Capital Connection too sharp, who won last Saturday to frank the form. Gate one, claim for Gallagher, he appeals for sure. Any rain no harm either.
4 Ahwahneechee (Bet Now: $4.40) is a talented gelding resuming for the Ross/Sweeney stable. This bloke really came of age last prep, graduating from a benchmark horse at Toowoomba to being a Saturday class galloper by the end of the prep. Wet track stats good, good record fresh, draws to get clear, Jimmy Orman on…there are plenty of things to like about him.
9 Dominant Crown (Bet Now: $6.50) is a Wayne Lawson trained gelding who gave them a spanking first up at Grafton before going to Eagle Farm where he was a little unlucky behind Capital Connection, getting held up when having something to offer. Got clear and made ground late, but the race was done and dusted. Back to 900m an interesting move, but stable is going well.
Race 4. (14:27) Lilydale Chicken Handicap (70) 1200m
1 Cabeirian (Bet Now: $6.00) for me but not really a race I want to get involved. This Gary Doughty trained gelding was heavily backed when racing here last Saturday and he let the punters down with a below par effort behind a proven city class horse in Cornrow. The claim for Jag does get him pretty well in at the weights, and this is not the strongest 70 going around.
6 Cool Drafts (Bet Now: $2.70) is a Ben Currie trained mare that is absolutely flying at the moment. Ran over the 1110m at Doomben two weeks ago off a little freshen up and you could make a case that she should have won. Just got held up and had to change course in the straight when building the revs, just missing out on picking up Cool Sequence. Up to 1200m, she’s well placed.
10 Jobiwood (Bet Now: $26.00) is a son of Not A Single Doubt for David Fletcher, so the wet track should be fine for him. Ran over this track/distance two weeks ago where he was on speed, copped pressure and couldn’t go on with it behind The Equalizer. Blinkers come off, Tegan Harrison takes over and we know she’s very good on a front runner. Could give a sight at odds.
Race 5. (15:07) Perfect Italiano Handicap (70) 1200m
Really tricky race. Just kept coming back to the three year old 12 Winter Passage (Bet Now: $2.90), who has been a real mode of consistency in recent times, the latest run being two weeks ago at Doomben when on speed and fighting gamely when third to Mishani Hustler. She’s beaten the older horses before, soft gate, solid enough form…she’ll do me without a great deal of confidence.
3 Monaco Playboy (Bet Now: $11.00) is certainly one horse who won’t mind getting his toe in. He ran over the 1110m at Doomben last time where he got a fair way back in the run but closed off well late behind Cool Sequence. Think up to 1200m suits and his heavy track form does read very well, including a win over proven city performer Taillevent. Hard to beat.
8 Tisani Magic (Bet Now: $18.00) looks to be racing in near career best form for the Kevin Kemp team. Ran over 1000m at Toowoomba last time where I thought she had her chance but couldn’t peg back the winning margin set up by Eight Over, who is flying at the moment for Ben Currie. Senior jock on from a soft draw, I think 1200m will be fine and could add value to multiples.
Race 6. (15:43) Gold Coast Stakes Quality 1800m
I think 6 Xebec (Bet Now: $3.50) is flying for Chris Waller and on his home track now, I think he’ll take some beating. Comes through the Tatts Cup from two weeks ago where it was dominated in front by Sword Of Justice but this horse, despite sitting back in a slowly run race, made up a stack of ground and was good late. 1800m on the home track, third up, looks an ideal recipe.
9 Mishani Vaidra (Bet Now: $4.80) has to be respected for Ben Currie. She produced some of the best late splits of the entire meeting when bolting in first up over 1350m at Doomben, appreciating a solid tempo before Lloyd eased her out wide on the turn and she put them away in a couple of strides. Repeats that effort here, she just about wins. 1350-1800m the only concern.
11 Looks Like Elvis (Bet Now: $2.70) is absolutely flying but he can’t quite crack it for a win. Was really keen on him when he raced at Randwick last time but for mine he was ridden very negatively by McEvoy at a crucial stage and probably wins if ridden a tad more aggressive before the turn when a close up third to Goathland. Back to Queensland and back on a track he has won on previously, he appeals.
Race 7. (16:22) Aquis Jewel 2YO 1200m
If 5 Girls Are Ready (Bet Now: $15.00) is anywhere near right, she should just about be beating these. Joe Cleary trains this filly, who hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions when outclassed behind Exhilarates but the run wasn’t too bad in defeat. The wins in Sydney prior were very good and overall, this race is lacking serious depth. Market probably the main guide, but if her fitness levels are forward, she’s the one.
Not sure what to make of 2 The Odyssey (Bet Now: $2.80). Good to see him bounce back with a win in the Prelude two weeks at Doomben, but was it really a guide? Ran the first 600m in just under 37 seconds, so he was always going to kick and win, which he ended up doing, running near sub 33 for the final 600m. He has got class on his side but he won’t get that sort of run this time around.
8 Buckets Of Pride (Bet Now: $31.00) is a Tycoon Ruler filly for the Chris Munce stable that resumes. She had two runs in the Spring to start her career. Probably should have won on debut after missing the start, then bumped into The Odyssey at her next start. Trialled on Feb 26 at Doomben and looked well enough to my eye behind Ready To Roam, so it’ll be interesting to see how she goes.
Race 8. (17:02) QTIS Jewel 3YO 1200m
I’m hoping that 3 Defence Missile (Bet Now: $5.50) can turn the tables on Mishani Hustler. This pair clashed in the Prelude two weeks ago at Doomben with the Ben Currie horse getting the job done. The market support said that Defence Missile was ready to win and was given every chance I thought by Lloyd. Just think Mishani Hustler got a cheap furlong or two down the side, which won the race and allowed that horse to give a strong kick late. Hoping the Les Ross galloper can turn the tables.
That’s nothing against 1 Mishani Hustler (Bet Now: $2.70). He puts himself on speed and is there to be beaten but he keeps finding a way to get the job done and the record says that. He is getting deep into the prep and I’d like to think there will be more pressure in front this time around, which could leave him vulnerable late. He can win, he goes in the quaddie…just not sure I could back him to win.
I reckon 14 Trail of Glory (Bet Now: $23.00) is going well. Sharp turn of foot and luck saw her win first up at Doomben over 1200m before racing at the same track/distance where she was back in a slowly run affair and couldn’t dash quick enough when fourth to Mishani Hustler. Fast run 1200m will be right up her alley because she is a filly who is looking like she wants 1400m.
Race 9. (17:42) TAB Goldmarket 1200m
The horse that will do no work is 15 Skate To Paris (Bet Now: $15.00), who is absolutely flying for the Chris Munce stable. This girl is three weeks between runs since racing at Eagle Farm when doing work from the wide draw and sticking on in a rather game performance behind the handy Scallopini. Has been plagued by bad barriers recently but finally draws an inside marble and she’ll do no work from the draw.
5 Mr Marbellouz (Bet Now: $2.35) looks back in business for Kevin Kemp and is right on track for a tilt at the Weetwood. He ran over 1200m at Doomben two weeks ago where he was hammered in betting and duly saluted, bolting up and leading all the way. Visually, very good, but he was gifted a rather soft lead and with only 52.5kg on his back, he rightfully put them away. He’ll cop pressure this time around. Can he absorb that and still dash at the end?
1 Tyzone (Bet Now: $6.00) looks an obvious threat. Toby Edmonds trains this bloke, who bounced back to winning form on January 5 over this track/distance when winning most impressively, running time and really, his class was too much for them. More depth this time around and comes here with no public trials, but he’s a very good fresh and hopefully he can sit off the fast speed and finish over the top.
Race 10. (18:25) Cracker Barrel Plate (Class 6) 1400m
Hoping there is method in the madness when tipping 15 River Racer (Bet Now: $5.50). Hasn’t won in nearly a year I know, but this mare, trained by Les Ross, has run some ripping races at the Gold Coast previously. Was okay last time at Eagle Farm behind Scallopini and the recent trial was good, but look at her Gold Coast form…three lengths away in the Silk Stocking, 1.6L off Savanna Amour in the Gold Coast Guineas, 3.5L away in the Magic Millions Guineas…yes, 46 weeks between wins, but I think she can take this out on a track she likes despite what the record says.
1 Brains (Bet Now: $4.40) is a little bit of a query. Looked so dynamic in his first two runs/wins this time in, but his next two runs have been a bit below par for mine. Thought he had every chance at Eagle Farm last time but couldn’t finish it off when fourth to Jaminzah. Perhaps returning to a tighter track will suit him? Not sure what’s doing but at his best, clearly in the mix.
3 All Summer Long (Bet Now: $9.50) looks a knockout chance. Dumped Lloyd here first up before racing over 1300m here where he was specked at odds and under Ryan Plumb, he absolutely bolted in and won by a space, with a bit in hand. Once upon a time, this was regarded as a Stakes class horse by Greg Bennett, so has always had the talent. Hopefully now he can fulfill it.
