The Sydney Autumn Carnival wraps up this Saturday at Randwick where it is All Aged Stakes Day. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is out eight metres from the 1600m-Winning Post; Out five metres for the remainder.

Race 1. (11:30) Tab Highway Handicap 1200m
Paul Shailer hasn’t ventured outside his lane since taking up training again and he comes here with an in form 9 Whatever I Say (Bet Now: $9.00 TOP ODDS), who is looking to make it three on the bounce after two strong wins over 1200m at Port Macquarie. A lead as well could be Nash riding 1kg over and connections happy to leave him on. He’s in the mix.
14 Sparring (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) has the best engine in the race. The query is 1200m on wet ground. On face value, he was plain last start at Sandown, but he was held up and lost momentum, and watching the replay, he was okay through the line. Stable finds J Mac…if 1200m is okay, he’s hard to beat.
8 Dalavin (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a query at 1200m, but is a wet tracker who will be on speed and give his all. Tough on speed win at Coonamble two back before going to Muswellbrook where he was there to be beaten but found under pressure and was too good. Good test here, but I think he can measure up.
Race 2. (12:05) Midway (bm72) 1400m
15 Mahagoni (Bet Now: $4.80 TOP ODDS) is a horse with talent for David Payne. Made his Australian debut in a Midway at Rosehill three weeks ago and he was one of the eye catchers of the meeting when closing off strongly behind Achira. Back to 1400m I find interesting but he looks Saturday metro class. Not sure about the rest.
3 Divine Breath (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is a quality mare for Theresa Bateup that resumed in a Provincial Qualifier where she just found them a bit sharp fresh when a game fifth to Barossa Rosa. She’ll improve with that run under the belt and maps super from the draw. She’s hard to beat.
6 Strawb (Bet Now: $7.50 TOP ODDS) appeals for Nathan Doyle. Resumed in a strong race at Muswellbrook and worked to the line strongly from off the speed when second to Constant Flight. 0/3 at the track but they have been in far stronger races than this and J Mac booked signals intent.
Race 3. (12:40) Frank Packer Plate 2000m
4 Straight Arron (Bet Now: $1.85 TOP ODDS) is a Group l winner in the making and I think another win here will be the ideal launching pad to potentially a Derby. Lot of arrogance about his Carbine Club win two weeks ago, sitting back in a slowly run race, but he made a mess of them. Destined for the top and this should be another stepping stone.
5 Jalmari (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) is racing like 2000m will be okay for him. He ran second to Straight Arron in the Carbine and had his chance but was clearly no match for the Waller horse. Maps to get a suck run from the inside gate and I think the rise in trip suits. Doubt he turns the tables, but runs well again.
6 Arnaqueur (Bet Now: $41.00 TOP ODDS) is suited up in trip. Jean Dubois trained three year old that has been kept on ice, having not raced since a game effort over 1850m at Newcastle behind a handy stayer in Olympic Theatre. Tick over trial was good…he’s a quirky animal, but his best is good enough to be a first four threat.
Race 4. (13:10) Champagne Stakes 1600m
5 Fireburn… (Bet Now: $1.45 TOP ODDS) could she lay claims for horse of the year with a win here? It’s been 30 years since a filly has won the 2YO Triple Crown of the Slipper/Sires/Champagne and all things being equal, Fireburn should be winning. Amazing win in the Slipper and it was backed up with arrogance in the Sires. You’d be stunned if something from that race beats her home here and that is the right form reference.
1 Let’srollthedice (Bet Now: $13.00 TOP ODDS) is a handy colt for Danny O’Brien. He tried hard in the Sires two weeks ago but was clearly no match for Fireburn, but I liked that he throw in the towel when beaten. He’ll have no trouble with the mile. Just not good enough to beat the star filly.
3 Counttheheadlights (Bet Now: $26.00 TOP ODDS) is a horse I have time for and I think come the Spring, he’s going to feature in some good races. Was a target race the Sires after the Blue Diamond and he was good late I thought behind Fireburn. There are two good things in this race. Fireburn to win and this guy to run a place.
Race 5. (13:50) J H B Carr Stakes 1400m
Jury is well and truly out on 2 Espiona (Bet Now: $1.80), but surely…surely she puts this lot away? If you are a forgiving person, you can make excuses for her in all three runs this time in. Wide throughout and nabbed late in the Light Fingers. The Surround saw her ridden with arrogance and the Coolmore, she was given absolutely none by Jay Ford. I think dropping miles in depth and hard fit now, now or never for her.
5 Party For One (Bet Now: $9.50) is racing like 1400m will be ideal for her. Ran in the PJ Bell two weeks ago and was good late from the back behind Heresy, closing the race nicely like a horse that wants further, which is what she gets here, and I do think she’s got upside to come.
7 Dalchini (Bet Now: $14.00) will be strong late. Far from disgraced two back in the Kembla Grange Classic behind Pretty Amazing before going to 1200m in the PJ Bell. Lacked the change up speed but liked her finale behind Heresy. If she can settle closer in the run, she’ll be dangerous.
Race 6. (14:30) Hall Mark Stakes 1200m
3 Big Parade (Bet Now: $1.70) is an absolute beauty for Mark Newnham who should prove hard to beat. Resumed several weeks ago in The Galaxy and loomed to win, hailed as the winner, but was nabbed late by Shelby Sixtysix. Loves racing at Randwick, has the form on the board…he’ll take beating.
1 Kementari (Bet Now: $5.50) resumes and is dangerous in a race like this. Hasn’t raced since the Magic Millions Cup when down the track and looking like a tired horse behind a beauty in Eleven Eleven. Just one soft 740m trial to get ready, has eyes on Brisbane, but flies fresh and will be strong late.
8 Count De Rupee (Bet Now: $9.00) is placed in a right race for the first time this prep. IMO, it’s been awful placement by the camp this time in, resuming in a Newmarket before contesting the TJ Smith. Tick over trial yesterday was quite good and this looks more his level. Best is good enough.
Race 7. (15:10) Jra Plate 2000m
2 Polly Grey (Bet Now: $3.50) is a ripping mare for Chris Waller. Can make a case to say she should have won at Rosehill three weeks ago but had no luck getting clear air to build momentum and really, she did a good job to get as close as she did to Mount Popa, who came out and placed in the Queen Elizabeth, so that has to read well.
1 Icebath (Bet Now: $2.80) seems to thrive on hard racing and this is the third week on the bounce she’ll race. Ran so well in the Doncaster and backed that up with an excellent effort last Saturday in the Queen Of The Turf. Has a real liking for Randwick and the way she’s racing, 2000m suits.
3 Numerian (Bet Now: $10.00) is following the path of stablemate Zaaki from last year. Run in the Doncaster, then run here before probably heading to Brisbane. Pass mark I thought fresh at Flemington before going to the Doncaster where he paraded like he would need one more and that’s how it panned out. He’ll love the rise to 2000m and he does boast a win over Sir Dragonet over 2000m on heavy ground.
Race 8. (15:50) All Aged Stakes 1400m
1 Mo’Unga (Bet Now: $6.50) is a quality animal for Annabel Neasham that is crying out for a dry deck. He is a horse who has been kept on ice, having not raced since the Futurity when a game second to Sierra Sue. Stable have tried their best to dodge the wet tracks but it gets to a point they have to run and the tick over trial was a good piece of work. Hard to beat provided the track isn’t completely cast.
14 In The Congo (Bet Now: $4.00) is on the seven day back up for WaterBott after contesting the Arrowfield last Saturday where he led and tried his guts out but couldn’t quite hold out a brilliant Mazu. Could have gone down the TJ path but saved him for the Arrowfield and back up into this. Hard to beat.
If the track is okay and not completely cast, then 13 Hungry Heart (Bet Now: $34.00) has class and will be strong late. She pretty much is first up here, with her lone run this year coming in the Apollo back on Feb 12 when a closing fourth to Think It Over. Trial was good and now with a prep likely aimed towards Brisbane, suspect she’ll be forward and ready to go, as she has been for a number of weeks.
Race 9. (16:30) Silverdale Farm (bm100) 1400m
Racing is about opinions, and if we all agreed, it would be a boring world and boring industry. So here’s mine. 16 Huetor (Bet Now: $4.80) will win a Group l before the end of the year and will be just about #1 seed for the Caulfield Cup/Melbourne Cup in terms of the locals, winning one. A stayer with a turn of foot is such a good recipe and his trials have been as good as you can see. He’s the 2022 Incentivise. He’ll go through his grades, win and measure up against the big boys in the Spring. Really keen on him here.
11 Art Cadeau (Bet Now: $8.50) is a beauty for Terry Robinson. Resumed in the Star Kingdom at Newcastle and loved the way he closed his race off in inferior ground when third to Gem Song. He’s right on track for better races, potentially a Stradbroke, so keen to see how he goes here.
9 Criaderas (Bet Now: $12.00) is a quality animal for James Cummings that resumes. He’s an enigma that has the talent under the hood but applying it to race day is the issue. But, he does have a real liking for Randwick and has trialled up well leading in. He’ll get back but be strong late.
Race 10. (17:05) Catanach's (bm88) 1200m
Just one soft trial to get ready for her return, but 9 April Rain (Bet Now: $4.80) is a quality mare that resumes. I think the wraps on her have been over the top, myself included in those wraps, but I just think it’s been too much too soon for her. Waller has given her a good break and loved the way she trialled behind Heresy. Keen to see how she goes.
The best version of 6 Maotai (Bet Now: $2.80) is certainly capable. He just went too keen on speed at Newcastle last time and punctured late, which followed a spank job trial win a few days prior. Nash on, he’ll lead this field up comfortably and off his first up win, he’ll take beating.
3 Acquitted (Bet Now: $13.00) is a very interesting runner. Former UK galloper that makes his Australian debut for Kris Lees. Trialled up super back in the Spring but spelled without a run. He trialled at Gosford and liked the way he moved on speed in a good piece of work. Likely eases back from the draw but should be strong late.
