The Gold Coast will host a bumper nine race card on Saturday, where the feature race is the Gold Coast Guineas (1200m). The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out a metre from the 1000m-400m; True for the remainder.
Gold Coast Guineas 🏆: View the Field for the Gold Coast Guineas
Race 1. (11:19) Darby Mccarthy Plate (c3) 1200m
3 Oriental Runner (Bet Now: $3.80) is the big watch here. Formerly trained in Sydney, now finds himself with John Smerdon so I’d be seeing what the market does with him here. Hasn’t raced since April 29 at Warwick Farm when on speed and tiring late when a close up fourth to Bold And Wild. Looks to get a sweet run from the gate and his Sydney form does read super.
2 Heritage Sash (Bet Now: $4.00) is a Team Edmonds trained gelding that is a very consistent type that is rarely far away from the thick end of the prize. Ran over 1100m here just over two weeks ago, when back in trip from 1200m to 1100m, and tried hard, but was nabbed near the peg by Deadly One. Back up to 1200m, this looks a suitable race on his home track.
Not easy to go Maiden to Class 3, but given the amount of scratchings, and a question mark on a few higher up in the market, think 11 All To Do (Bet Now: $8.00) has to be respected. Broke the maiden tag at the Sunny Coast last time out and gave them a spanking in leading throughout, tactics I dare say Jake Bayliss will look to employ again. If left alone, could take some beating.
Race 2. (11:54) Heineken Hcp 2200m
3 Fighting Teo (Bet Now: $6.00) on top but this race could change dramatically with scratchings. He ran over 1800m here last time out when just off the speed in the small field and tried hard but couldn’t finish it off when fourth to Lota Creek Gold. Think the step up to 2200m will be ideal, he’s got upside and does like racing at this track.
Back up to 2200m should suit the Kris Lees trained 6 Mongolian Wolf (Bet Now: $3.00). He was impressive when winning at this track/distance before coming back to 2000m two weeks ago at Doomben and was left flat footed when the sprint went on but surged late and was good when second to Magnufighter. Back up in trip I like for him and is one of the hardest to beat.
I reckon the Chris Waller trained 1 Le Juge (Bet Now: $4.20) has to be respected here. Ran over 2200m last time out at the Gold Coast and with the 62kg, he was given a peach by Cahill. Just bogged down by the weight and couldn’t see it through. To me, that trip sees him out, so hopefully a cold steer and a drag up into the race, he’ll be quite effective.
Race 3. (12:29) Bundaberg Rum (bm72) 1400m
Giving respect to the stablemate of He’s Imposing, 11 The Golden Hind (Bet Now: $8.00). He ran over 1400m at the Sunny Coast last time out when back near last in the run and looked no hope, but somehow got the inside split and almost got there when a close up third. Hopefully can sit closer in the run this time around and should be hard fit now.
12 The Chosen One (Bet Now: $5.50) is worth another chance. Was all over him when he ran at the Sunny Coast last start but he didn’t fire a shot and was most disappointing, but upon reflection, they just went too slow. Like the Winkers going on, hopefully to sharpen him up, and returning to the Gold Coast I think will suit him.
8 El Chaparro (Bet Now: $20.00) resumes here for Team Meagher and I think is worth a look at odds. Has done all his racing in Victoria to this point and didn’t build too bad of a record in some tidy races with good form around. Trialled back on April 21 and was solid enough behind Charway. I think best to watch the market with him.
Race 4. (13:04) Xxxx Dry (bm72) 1400m
I’ll take a chance with 13 Zoulou Dancer (Bet Now: $7.50) for Gary Doughty. Her overall winning record isn’t flash, but gee she spanked them last Wednesday at the Sunny Coast. Showed really good change up speed when asked by Hellyer and in a couple of strides, it was race over. Couple of runs prior were good and on a track she likes, I think she can measure up.
3 Lashoni (Bet Now: $6.50) is a mare for Tony Gollan that is racing well this time in. Hasn’t been sighted since April 18 when racing at Doomben and making up good ground from the back when fifth to Scathing. Should get three wide cover from the gate and get a decent drag up into the race. Race sets up well for her to launch late.
11 Lope For Joya (Bet Now: $14.00) is a Les Ross trained mare that was big odds when she raced at Doomben a fortnight back but despite being nearly $101, her run was full of merit I thought behind Mr Belaggio. Back to Mares grade, this looks more her go and I think she can run a positive race here at decent odds, especially up in trip.
Race 5. (13:39) We Are Gold Coast Plate (c6) 1200m
7 Soxagon (Bet Now: $1.60) is a quality four year old for Mark Currie that was just under two lengths away from getting automatic entry into the Stradbroke when second to Vega One in The Gateway at the end of last prep. Resumed at this track/distance on May 1, was heavily backed, and despite a few nervous moments in the straight, his class got him home. Staying at 1200m is the only knock because he looks like he wants 1400m.
12 Thine Is The Power (Bet Now: $3.20) is 2/2 since joining Team Edmonds and I think she can make it 3/3 with luck in running. Impressive winner over the 1050m at Doomben before going to the Gold Coast when given a lovely ride by Nick Keal and the mare was far too good for her rivals, landing some big bets. Harder here, but confident she can measure up.
2 Right Or Wrong (Bet Now: $7.00) is the huge query here. Resumes for Lindsay Gough, having not raced since October 20 back in 2018 when down the track at Randwick behind impressive winner Mahalangur. 82 weeks since that run, no public trials, so a bit of guessing here, but can sprint well fresh and like the booking of Ryan Maloney.
Race 6. (14:19) Ken Russell Memorial Classic 1200m
Going the way of 3 Spokesman (Bet Now: $10.00). Press Statement colt for Chris Waller that comes here off the back of a slogging win at Warwick Farm where he was wide throughout but kept finding and surged hard late to get the win. He looks to be a candidate for the JJ Atkins, so 1200m perhaps a tad sharp, but he looked to be speedy enough in a recent Rosehill trial to handle it.
4 Saffiano (Bet Now: $9.00) appears to be a nice horse for Chris Waller with good upside. Earned a trip north after his win three weeks ago in the Clarendon at Rosehill over 1400m where he was very strong late. To me, he’ll be better in the Spring over a trip. The knock on him is that race rated terribly for the meeting on the clock. 1200m is too short, but if they overdo it in front, he’s the one to watch out for.
5 Tick Tock Boom (Bet Now: $31.00) is a David Vandyke trained colt that has three career outings for two placings, the latest of which came on his home track at the Sunny Coast in a 2YO maiden where he was wide no cover for the trip yet kept chipping away and got close to beating Superare. Overall form reads just fair, but liked the way he toughed it out last time so a strong 1200m will be no issue.
Race 7. (14:59) James Squire Hcp (c6) 1800m
4 Milk Man (Bet Now: $3.60) is nearing a win for Matty Smith. Was keen on that being at Doomben two weeks ago, but he didn’t get the clearest of paths in the straight and he seems to be a horse that needs to build momentum properly, but overall, looked to have his chance when pipped near the peg by Sir Barnabus. Think 1800m suits…just a long time between wins is the knock.
5 King Full (Bet Now: $3.70) has done a pretty good job since joining Kacy Fogden and finally has that winning feeling under the belt. He hadn’t raced beyond a mile for Fogden until the last two starts over 1800m at the Gold Coast, the latest where he lapped it up and was very strong to the line in winning, just. For mine, he gets run of the race from the gate and this isn’t the strongest Class 6.
10 High Power (Bet Now: $18.00) is a Kris Lees trained stayer that looks to be going well Ran over 2100m at Tamworth last time and really, on the turn it was no betting because he was the only horse you wanted to be on. For his fans, he couldn’t go on with it and was nabbed late by Hand It In. Back in trip I don’t mind for him because this isn’t a strong Class 6 and he has run well in Queensland before.
Race 8. (15:39) Gold Coast Guineas 1200m
In the corner of 2 Hightail (Bet Now: $4.80) for Team Snowden. To the eye, the trial was just plain, but he didn’t have the Blinkers on. They went on raceday first up on the Kenso track two weeks ago and he showed his class with a strong win against the older horses, safely holding them on the line. He’s got a stack more improvement to come and clearly is the one to beat IMO against these.
10 Exhilarates (Bet Now: $5.00) will be spotting them a start but will be charging late. Looks to be intent too given the Blinkers are on first up. Her two trials leading in, both at Hawkesbury, have been solid without being great, but she’s a quality raceday filly and is proven at this track/distance having won the Magic Millions last year. The gate is the only knock.
5 Garibaldi (Bet Now: $17.00) is a Tony Gollan trained colt that looked set up for his GF at Doomben two weeks ago behind The Odyssey, and was confidently backed to win, but stablemate to Garibaldi, The Move, didn’t apply too much heat to The Odyssey and that didn’t suit Garibaldi. More pressure here you would assume so giving him a chance despite this being a harder race.
Race 9. (16:19) Silk Stocking 1200m
Godolphin love to target this race and I think they’ve picked the right pony for it in 2020 with 1 Multaja (Bet Now: $5.50). Resumed three weeks ago in the Hawkesbury Crown over 1300m at Rosehill and loved the way she found the line first up with the big weight off two soft trials, running a close up fifth to Sweet Scandal. Think she’ll take good improvement from that and is clearly hard to beat.
Thought 4 Resin (Bet Now: $12.00) was outstanding in the Gold Rush at Rosehill, sitting four wide no cover on a hot speed and was still there until the final 75-100m. If we were on a wet track, she’d be a good thing, but even on a dry deck, she’ll be fine. Just a little query from the gate but has enough early toe to overcome it.
3 River Racer (Bet Now: $19.00) is a Les Ross trained mare who loves racing at the Gold Coast. Forget she went around at the Sunny Coast last time out when wide throughout and just couldn’t get involved into the contest in the race won by Just Orm. Keep in mind that form was franked big time last Saturday with Tambo’s Mate winning the BRC Sprint last Saturday. Knockout chance always at this level, especially against the Mares.
