Ten races will be run and won at Rosehill this Saturday for McKell Cup Day. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
McKell Cup 🏆: View the Field and Odds for the McKell Cup
Race 1. (11:00) Atc Bookmakers Recognition Hcp 1400m
1 Osipenko (Bet Now: $1.75 TOP ODDS) could well be a rocket for Chris Waller. He’s bred to be a 2000m+ horse, but he went through his gears like a really good horse to win on debut over 1300m two weeks ago at this track. Had trialled well prior to that, so there was no fluke about the win and he can go on with it.
7 Razeta (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) is an improver for Kris Lees. Not sure she was entirely suited on the tight track at Wyong on debut but once she balanced up in the straight, I liked the way she finished her race off, nailing them late to win. Harder here, but she does command some level of respect.
2 Kibou (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) is a progressive animal for the WaterBott camp that comes here off the back of a first up maiden win at Warwick Farm. It wasn’t a strong field he beat up, but he did spank them and was impressive, which followed solid trial work. Harder here, but he’ll run well.
Race 2. (11:35) Tab Highway Hcp (C3) 1200m
1200m is a query with 11 Summer Glow (Bet Now: $4.20 TOP ODDS), but gate one and a firm deck should help her cause. Ran over 1100m two weeks ago in the Highway here and she looked all over a winner the way she was trucking but couldn’t quite finish. Gets a soft trip in transit and brings the solid form lines I feel.
2 Pure Fuego (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a key threat. He resumed four weeks ago in a Highway here and was quite good from the back in an encouraging return behind the in form Boom Boom Basil. Tick over trial since was a good piece of work and gets an upgrade with Bowman steering.
12 Hurn Court (Bet Now: $21.00 TOP ODDS) is a different and I think a better horse under the care of Brett Robb since being transferred from Gayna Williams. Big win two back at Dubbo before racing in a Highway here two weeks ago where he was very good from the back when a close up fourth to Proverbial. Like him up to 1200m and hard to beat if he can settle closer in the run.
Race 3. (12:10) Midway (Bm72) 1500m
Fitter and back on firmer footing, I’m quite keen on 4 Harvey’s Way (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS). Ran over 1400m in a Midway here two weeks ago and he looked home when presented, but as soon as you had that thought, French Bonnet got the run and she just had a bit too much class late. Harvey’s Way is a dry tracker, he gets that here…keen.
2 Marnix (Bet Now: $4.40 TOP ODDS) is on the seven day back up after racing last Saturday at Randwick where he got a mile out of his ground but was good late behind the in form Jojo Was A Man. Back to Midway level, if he’s within range, he can be quite dangerous and be strong at the end.
5 Oakfield Prince (Bet Now: $11.00 TOP ODDS) is a horse with talent for Damien Lane. Game second over the mile at Eagle Farm two back before contesting the French Bonnet race from a fortnight back and was good from off the speed when third. If he can settle a pair closer in the run, he’ll prove to be a threat.
Race 4. (12:45) Furphy (Bm72) 1800m
11 Naval Seal (Bet Now: $6.00 TOP ODDS) looks an above average colt for Chris Waller. He spanked them to break the maiden two back at Ballarat before going to Caulfield where he surged hard late from off the speed, just missing out on picking up Hopon Harry in a blanket finish. Hard to beat I’d suggest down in the weights and up in trip.
7 Willinga Rufio (Bet Now: $3.00 TOP ODDS) is a progressive three year old for Mark Newnham that is 2/2 to start his career. Knuckled down strongly to win on debut at Hawkesbury before racing at this track/distance where he led throughout, got control and really, he gave them a spanking. Heading in the right direction so he’s hard to beat.
4 Karlstad (Bet Now: $12.00 TOP ODDS) is heading in the right direction for Chris Waller. Game third to Comme Bella Fille first up, who won last Saturday. Karlstad then went to Canterbuy where he got into a lovely spot off the speed and once Bowman pushed the button, away he went and he was dominant on the line. He’ll love a rise in trip and has good upside.
Race 5. (13:20) Roger Norton (Bm78) 2000m
1 Arapaho (Bet Now: $3.20) has a liking for Rosehill and is in form. He looked like Zaaki when winning here two back before proving that was no fluke with a game second to Surf Dancer here a fortnight back. I reckon 2000m is a little query with him but if he gets a soft run, he should be fine, and brings the class.
6 Oceanic Flash (Bet Now: $26.00) will love a rise to 2000m. Ryan/Alexiou trained gelding that ran over 1800m at Eagle Farm last start where he got a mile out of his ground in a race not run to suit, but was quite good in defeat behind Bartholemeu Dias. Extra 200m suits, back on the home track and should be strong at the end.
7 Dick Whittington (Bet Now: $34.00) is working up to a win I feel. Ran over 2000m at Flemington last start in a fast run race and he worked to the line okay without threatening behind Excelleration. His overall record isn’t too flash, but last start was encouraging and I think firmer footing helps.
Race 6. (13:55) Nsw Bookmakers Co-Op (Bm72) 1100m
13 Quatenus (Bet Now: $5.00) is a quality mare for James Cummings that resumes. She hasn’t raced since Jan 21 at Canterbury where she chased strongly from off the speed when second to then boom horse Nasturtium. Thought she moved well in a recent Hawkesbury trial and maps ideal from the soft gate. She’ll do me.
14 Petulant (Bet Now: $4.60) deserves another chance. Team Hawkes trained filly that resumed on testing ground at Warwick Farm and it was a meeting where you either handled it or didn’t. She was in the latter but was game when second to Curtis Island. Reckon back on top of the ground, you’ll see a different and better filly.
9 Curtis Island (Bet Now: $21.00) has come back in super order Robert Pearse. He has won two on the bounce, winning impressively on the Kenso two back before proving that was no fluke with a dominant win at Warwick Farm. The dry track is the worry, but hard to knock the way he’s going.
Race 7. (14:30) W. J. Mckell Cup 2000m
8 Skyman (Bet Now: $2.80) is a hard horse to catch, but I was keen on him last start and despite getting beaten, I am keen on him once again. He was the run of the meeting I thought over 1800m here two weeks ago. Back last in what was a walk race, he did an amazing job to work home like he did when third to Surf Dancer. If he can settle closer in the run, gee he’ll take holding out.
Keen on 3 Dr Drill (Bet Now: $4.60) running well for the Maher/Eustace camp. I was keen on him in the Scone Cup but the track was just a touch on the wet side and that beat him in the end when second to Rustic Steel. Back on top of the ground, hard fit now, I think he’s the main threat to Skyman.
1 Southern France (Bet Now: $51.00) is a fascinating runner. Formerly with the Maher/Eustace camp, he now finds himself with Matty Smith. Hasn’t raced in just under a year, but his two trials this time in have been quite encouraging, and he does have these on toast re class. Market will be fascinating.
Race 8. (15:05) Warren Woodcock (Bm78) 1500m
I’m going to take a chance on 4 Irish Legend (Bet Now: $5.50), a former UK stayer that makes his Australian debut for Les Bridge. He showed really good promise when racing over there, and was a Derby candidate as a three year old. The first trial was so so, but they rode with more positivity in the second trial and gee he looked a nice horse. Needs a few scratchings but if he gets a run, I think he’s worth an each way speck because I think he goes pretty good.
11 Wicklow (Bet Now: $5.00) can be a big improver here. He was well fancied when resuming here two weeks ago but being a short priced favourite, he was a targeted horse and those around made sure he wasn’t going to get a smooth run. He wouldn’t have won, but should have finished closer behind Mach Schnell. Can’t sack him off that and he’s clearly got plenty of upside.
It was a great training effort to get 5 Mach Schnell (Bet Now: $7.50) back into the winners list here a fortnight back after finishing tailed off last the start prior. He found the front and was there to be run down, but he found, kicked hard and just got the win. Harder here, but he commands respect.
Race 9. (15:45) Robert Patrick (Bm78) 1300m
7 Lovely Esteem (Bet Now: $18.00) is a fascinating runner. Former Irish mare that makes her Australian debut for Chris Waller. The form around her from Ireland is quite strong and though I can’t find a trial for her in Sydney, she jumped out at Flemington on April 29 and I thought moved very well. I’ll take a chance with her.
3 Lady Of Luxury (Bet Now: $4.50) looks one of the hardest to beat. She has been close up in both runs this time in, the latest being here two weeks ago when third to impressive winner Niffler, just getting held up at a crucial stage. Senior jock, gate one, expect intent from the outset.
4 Nicci’s Fling (Bet Now: $21.00) will love firmer footing. She found a very testing track at Randwick last time out and just struggled to pick up in the conditions behind Nothinsweetaboutme. Back on a track she should appreciate, and with weight relief, she’s hard to beat with a repeat effort from the Dark Jewel the start prior.
Race 10. (16:25) Barry Cook (Bm78) 1300m
9 Oxford Tycoon (Bet Now: $12.00) is worth a 1×3 speck in the get out for Kim Waugh. He is one of these horses that I think will improve big time finding a dry track, being plagued by wet ground all prep, but he was good in defeat and close up two weeks go behind stablemate Kingsheir. Maps well, firmer footing, I think he’ll run a positive race.
13 French Marine (Bet Now: $6.00) should be suited here for Kris Lees. Close up fourth two back in the Country Cup at Scone before going back to 1300m at Randwick a few weeks back and closed his race off pretty well without threatening when third to Cotehele. Like him back on firmer footing and form around him reads well.
8 Cuban Royale (Bet Now: $18.00) rarely runs a howler at Rosehill and that trend continued here two weeks back when near last in the run and while he was never really a winning threat, his finale was more than sound when a close up fourth to Kingsheir. Dangerous if he can settle closer in the run.
