The Kensington track at Randwick will play host to a nine race card on Saturday. The weather is fine, the track is heavy (8) and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (13:15) Schweppes Hcp 1150m
I think the raced brigade are a bit thin depth wise so I think it’s a race for first starters. Landed with 11 Morioka (Bet Now: $19.00 TOP ODDS). Think she’ll get better with time, but gee she looks a good mover. Loved the way she closed off in her Canterbury trial under no real riding pressure, taking off significant ground from those in front. Bred to be good, draws soft and a win would secure her spot in the Magic Millions.
10 Laurelin (Bet Now: $2.90 TOP ODDS) is probably been the standout at the trials in term of visually. Looked to be trucking along sweetly near the speed in her Canterbury trial and Rachel King didn’t really move on the filly, winning the trial nicely and winning in solid time as well. Think she’s one of the hardest to beat.
Team Snowden and China Horse Club used this race last year to get Aim into the Magic Millions and they’ll be looking to repeat the dose in 2021 with 4 Jet Pack (Bet Now: $15.00 TOP ODDS), a Fastnet Rock colt on debut. He’s been given a decent grounding with a prep in the Spring with one trial before a spell. Has come back this prep with two trials under the belt and has looked pretty good, so keen to see how he goes.
Race 2. (13:50) Tab Highway Hcp (c3) 1400m
3 Mother’s Mercy (Bet Now: $1.95 TOP ODDS) could be a sneaky Country Championships contender if she wins this. 3/3 to start her career and has been impressive each time she has stepped out, albeit will say she hasn’t left home with all three runs/wins coming on her home track at Scone, so good test here, but she looks more than capable.
6 Costas (Bet Now: $10.00 TOP ODDS) can be a big improver here third up for Brett Thompson. This gelding was luckless fresh at Scone behind the in form Allez Rev before going to a Highway here on the course proper two weeks back where he wanted the rain to come. It did, but it came later in the day, so he was on a firm deck and ran okay without threatening. Track should have some juice in it and has upside to come.
7 Chewie Two (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) will put himself on speed and try hard. That was the case last time out at Scone, attempting to lead throughout. He gave a decent enough kick but just couldn’t quite finish it off when third to Mother’s Mercy. Think that’s decent enough form here for what looks a moderate Highway as a whole and he’s got the right racing pattern.
Race 3. (14:25) Heineken (bm78) 2400m
If 1 Skymax (Bet Now: $3.10 TOP ODDS) can handle a rain affected track, then it is well and truly race over. He’s better than these. Outstanding win at Warwick Farm last time, really charging clear late to win by five but given the dominance, the margin felt double. Has won on soft ground at Newbury and on breeding should handle it. If he does, he wins.
4 Parry Sound (Bet Now: $3.40 TOP ODDS) is fitter and should be suited up to 2400m for John O’Shea. Had several weeks off prior to racing over 2000m on the course proper here a fortnight ago. Sat just off the speed and loomed large to win, but we know Gone Bye is a hard horse to get past and he was simply too good on the day. Got improvement to come and three back did win at this track/distance.
3 Mongolian Wolf (Bet Now: $17.00 TOP ODDS) is one to entertain for wider multiples. Kris Lees trained gelding that ran on the course proper here two weeks ago. Got back to near last in the run and was never really a winning threat, but didn’t mind the way he made up ground late in the piece. Not sure I could back him to win but is a must for multiples.
Race 4. (15:00) Precise Air (bm72) 1300m
2 Private Eye (Bet Now: $3.80 TOP ODDS) looks a very smart animal for Joe Pride and could be a sneaky Magic Millions Guineas horse with a win. He’s been quite impressive in both runs back from a break, winning fresh at Gosford before racing here where he had a suck run behind the speed before angling into clear and gee he let down like a nice horse to win again. Can confirm his ticket to the Gold Coast with a win here.
7 Tycoonist (Bet Now: $6.50 TOP ODDS) is bred to be a swimmer so the forecast for rain won’t hurt his chances. Returned as a gelding when racing at Canterbury last time, backed as if unbeatable late and Nash made a good thing of it by sending him to the front and it was race over shortly after jumping. Harder here, but think he’s up to it.
6 Count De Rupee (Bet Now: $4.60 TOP ODDS) is a nice horse and should be forgiven for his failure in the Wyong 3&4YO Magic Millions. I liked him that day but things just didn’t fall into place for him and on face value, was disappointing. The depth there was strong and far stronger than what he faces here, so he can bounce back for sure.
Race 5. (15:40) Maroubra Handicap (bm100) 1550m
See no reason to jump off 2 Edison (Bet Now: $1.85). Bjorn Baker has this guy absolutely flying at the moment, winning two on the bounce. Showed good ticker to win two back at Rosehill but he was much more dominant on the course proper here two weeks ago. Sat on speed before being given some rein by Clark at the top of the straight and away he went. He was dominant and see the 1550m here being no issue at all.
1 Passage Of Time (Bet Now: $9.50) is racing well for Joe Pride and should prove hard to beat here. Caught the eye in his first two runs back from a spell before racing over 1400m on the course proper here where he seemed to get the right run in transit and loomed to win. Just couldn’t quite finish it off. On trial at the trip, but does have class.
6 Special Missile (Bet Now: $18.00) can be a definite improve here at odds for the Freedman camp. Has just looked like he has needed the runs under the belt to get ready and traditionally he does get better as the prep goes on. Not sure I could back him to win, but with a more positive ride, can see him sneaking a first four spot.
Race 6. (16:20) The Agency Real Estate (bm78) 1300m
If this track is playing fair, then 4 Smart Image (Bet Now: $2.15) should win en route to the Magic Millions Guineas. He was excellent when winning fresh at Canterbury, diving through late nearer the inside to win impressively. The form out of that race is mixed, but he looks a very good prospect and meets a pretty weak field as a whole.
Think 2 Irish Songs (Bet Now: $12.00) is going really well and back to 78 grade, think he can run a big race. Last couple of runs have come in much stronger races, each time won by Edison, and Irish Songs didn’t have a great amount of luck each time he stepped out in those runs. Better suited here and the depth here, overall, is thin.
8 Nordicus (Bet Now: $9.50) can be a big improver here. Anthony Cummings trained gelding that resumed over 1150m here and on face value, he was plain, but he was nearer the inside and at that stage of the day, the inside was quicksand. He’s bred to be a star but clearly won’t be living up to the deeds of mum and dad. Still, think he can be competitive here.
Race 7. (17:00) Sky Racing Active (bm78) 1000m
7 De Grawin (Bet Now: $3.50) is a talented mare for Joe Pride that resumes. Hasn’t raced since toughing it out strongly on speed to win over 1000m on the course proper here on the opening day of the new season. Has had two trials to get ready and has looked pretty good to the eye. Rachel King steers, proven on wet ground, hard to beat.
6 Our Bellagio Miss (Bet Now: $4.40) is flying for Greg Hickman and should take some beating here. Run was just fair two back here behind Mossman Gorge but she bounced back to her best on the course proper when finding under pressure and surging hard late to nab Sally’s Day right on the peg. Off that effort, she’s a leading contender against these.
1 Removal (Bet Now: $26.00) isn’t badly in at the weights and he is a city class horse when he brings his best. Has been given a few weeks break since racing at Scone when running last of six but not beaten far by Fritz’s Factor. He loves getting his toe in and with the 3kg claim, he’s very well in at the weights to run a positive race at odds.
Race 8. (17:40) Tab (bm78) 1550m
1 Badoosh (Bet Now: $6.50) might need one more but he is the class factor and brings the superior form given he resumed and was down the track without a great deal of luck at Randwick two weeks back behind Edison. He is a winner at this track and has a good second up record, plus with his draw, and pattern, he is hard to beat here.
3 Snowfire (Bet Now: $1.85) is suited up in trip I feel. Resumed with a win at the trip at Rosehill before going to the course proper here. Was caught in a tricky spot from a wide gate yet kept battling away and was quite good in defeat I feel. That was 1400m on testing ground so think that sort of run will bring him on for this 1550m assignment.
4 Cisco Bay (Bet Now: $4.50) looks a leading contender. Ryan/Alexiou trained gelding that produced really good change up speed to win the Nowra Cup two back. Then raced on the course proper here where he got back and worked home well against the pattern behind New Arrangement. Doesn’t want too wet of a track but hard to knock the way he’s going.
Race 9. (18:15) Ranvet (bm78) 1100m
12 Tiny (Bet Now: $3.70) looks a smart filly for James Cummings and I think she can measure up to these. Resumed over 1100m on the Kenso track where she was off the bit and chasing on the turn, but she ran through the pain barrier, surged hard late and was able to wear down short priced elect Belieber in the last couple of strides. Think she’s above average and can win this.
The bets were well and truly landed with 5 Salina Dreaming (Bet Now: $3.30) first up on the course proper here three weeks ago. Opened $26 on the Wednesday before officially starting $7.50 and in the run, she was the only horse you wanted to be on. She was trucking and once the button was pressed, she was always going to win. Harder here, but that resumption and trial prior suggests she’s flying.
This is nearly D-Day for 9 Longbottom (Bet Now: $13.00). On class and quality, she can measure up to these. Just unsure as to where she is at. Thought she was just fair fresh at Wyong, then last start on the Kenso, seemed to get her chance but was plain late behind Monte Ditto. Her best is good enough to win and third up, don’t think there are any excuses.
