Twilight racing makes a rare appearance this Friday in Sydney with Rosehill hosting a seven race program. The weather is fine, the track is good (4) and the rail is out six metres for the entire circuit.
Race 1. (15:10) Sky Racing Active Mdn Plate 1800m
Think Godolphin win the race. Just a matter of picking which one and I am going with 3 Dhakuri (Bet Now: $4.00), who I think has been quite good in two career outings. He was an eye catcher on debut behind a good one in Harmony Rose before going to Wyong where he looked a bit drunk around the turns but balanced and tried very hard when a narrow second to stablemate Winston Blue. Gets the rise to 1800m, bigger track…happy to be in his corner.
5 Regulation (Bet Now: $2.90) looks the next best. Stablemate of Dhakuri that has been close up in both outings. On debut was beaten narrowly by subsequent Spring Stakes winner The Eleanora before going to Kembla where he wasn’t 100% happy on the wet track. Gets firmer footing here and J Mac, you would assume, has the first choice, so has to be respected.
The Gosford formline is a key one here and a bit surprised that 4 Don Arcangelo (Bet Now: $6.00) is the same price as Bella Violet. He beat the filly at Gosford and was taking good ground off her at Kembla the start prior, so with that form reference, I think Don Arcangelo is the value of that pair…does he want 2000m now?
Race 2. (15:50) Bowermans Furniture Mdn Hcp 1400m
I’m a big fan of 5 Think High (Bet Now: $7.50) and I love the Blinkers going on first time. Was on him when he raced on Cup Day at Randwick where he lost the plot on the turn and looked like he would run last, but picked up and surged hard to finish an eye catching third. Blinkers go on to sharpen him up and hopefully that offsets potentially wanting extra ground.
2 Kiku (Bet Now: $2.40) is hard to beat for Chris Waller. Resumed on Cup Day at Randwick and she looked all over a winner when Kathy asked for the big effort. Just first up off one trial, she lacked the killer blow and I think bumped into a smart one in Rustic Steel. That form reads well I think. Will just need luck from a tricky gate.
Wary of 3 Skywolf (Bet Now: $10.00) for Team Hawkes, who comes to NSW after debuting a few weeks ago at Echuca where he was very raw and new to the caper but once he balanced up with clear air, he was good late behind Savagery in what has turned out to be a solid form reference. Winkers go on, so keen to see how he measures up.
Race 3. (16:30) Impending @ Darley (bm68) 1200m
The trials suggest he might need the run and the Blinkers back on, but there is a touch of quality about 2 Saffiano (Bet Now: $4.20) and I’ll take a gamble on him and his class getting him home. Hasn’t raced since the JJ Atkins when pulling up with excuses (galloped on) behind Rothfire. Gelded, Blinkers off, a change of stable, two trials…just want a market push.
1 El Buena (Bet Now: $2.80) has done a good job in recent times for Chris Waller, winning his past two. Strong win two back at Wyong before backing that up with an impressive victory on the Kenso track at Randwick. Has to go up a fair bit in weight and the depth here, as a whole, is pretty good on paper. But, he’s hard fit and in form.
Fast run 1200m will help the cause of 6 Fastconi (Bet Now: $8.00). Lacks the class of some of these, but is racing well and will do no work from the gate. He had his chance last time out at Hawkesbury but battled away well when third to Invasion Day. Bowman takes over and that was his first run in a few weeks, so you’d assume there is improvement to come.
Race 4. (17:10) Tab (bm72) 1800m
Very keen to see 6 Sacred Suite (Bet Now: $3.70) on a big track. He’s been up a little while for Chris Waller but is holding his form really well, like the majority of his horses do when racing in Queensland. He ran over the mile at Doomben two weeks ago when back near last in the run and never really a winning hope but liked his finale when second to Grand Zou. Think he’ll love the spacious surroundings of Rosehill and is hard to beat.
3 Montserrat (Bet Now: $4.20) is the map horse. He has gate one and either leads or gets the box seat sit. Tommy rode a 12/10 race on him last Wednesday at Hawkesbury, controlling from the front, and 600m out he wasn’t getting beat. Harder here, but just maps to get the dream run in transit and the claim for Sherry helps.
1 Express Courier (Bet Now: $5.50) is a talented animal for Keith Dryden that can be hard to beat here. He comes through the Country Classic where he got back in the run and tried very hard but couldn’t quite finish it off when fifth to Fast Talking. Gets Nash to steer and from the gate, hopefully can stalk Montserrat and be strong at the end.
Race 5. (17:50) Wsabe (bm72) 1500m
I’m keen to have an each way bet here on the John Sarganet trained 4 Come Along (Bet Now: $4.60). He has a very good record at midweek level and his last start effort at Randwick on Cup Day was very good behind Atlantic King. Hopefully can sit closer in the run from the good draw and if they overdo it in front, he can finish right over the top.
5 New Tycoon (Bet Now: $3.50) is starting to become a bit too good for them at the Provincials so keen to see how he goes at metro level. He gave them a belting over the mile at Gosford last time out under a lovely front running steer from Josh Parr. From gate one, can see him find the front and prove very hard to beat.
Back on a firmer deck, 1 Kaapfever (Bet Now: $35.00) can run a much improved race here. Joe Pride trained gelding that ran just under three weeks ago here on a bottomless track and struggled to pick his feet up when last to Elaborate. Gets back to on top of the ground and IMO, $51+ for him seems a bit silly. Must include in multiples.
Race 6. (18:25) Vinery (bm72) 1500m
This race has been thrown a bit due to scratchings, so I’ll have a throw at the stumps with 13 Perfect Pitch (Bet Now: $19.00) for Keith Dryden. Has had two runs back from a spell, each run on testing wet ground and while on paper, she handles it, IMO she’s much better on top of the ground, which is what she gets this afternoon and as a whole, this isn’t a strong race.
5 Ruby Tuesday (Bet Now: $8.50) is suited up to 1500m for the Gary Portelli stable. Thought she was pretty good last time out in what looked a decent enough race at Rosehill, bearing in mind she’s a mare who is better suited on firmer footing and up in trip, which is the set up she gets here, so she can run a much improved race.
4 Ready’s Girl (Bet Now: $41.00) can be an improver at odds. Clare Cunningham trained mare that comes through a race at Randwick on Cup Day won by Regal Stage, who of course came out to win the Snake Gully Cup, so the form reads well and Ready’s Girl produced decent late splits at Randwick, suggesting a rise to 1500m will suit, and is back to Mares grade.
Race 7. (19:05) Iron Jack (bm72) 1300m
6 Papal Warrior (Bet Now: $5.50) certainly has the quality to take this out and first up, I think he can resume a winner. Hasn’t raced since September 12 at Rosehill when pretty good in defeat when fourth to Discharged in what has turned out to be a strong form reference. Just one soft trial but he is a horse who races best with fresh legs.
8 Rammstein (Bet Now: $3.80) is a son of Snitzel for the Ryan/Alexiou camp that has been freshened up after recording an impressive first up win at Kembla Grange where he really knuckled down late under pressure and found plenty to win. Tick over trial last Thursday here was impressive and stable gets J Mac to steer.
The knockout chance here for me is 17 Speed Camera (Bet Now: $27.00). Trialled like a jet prior to resuming at Bathurst and under a lovely steer from Matty Cahill, the mare was much too good for her rivals in an impressive return. Subsequent trial was good, so to my eye, she’s flying and deserves a crack in town.
